I'm a year in and doing alright

Get a formal education in the Russian language, then live in Russia for a while.
After 4 years of university including a year spent in Moscow and Yaroslavl I now speak at a very high standard

Play dota 2

И кaкoвo этo пpoeбaть 4 гoдa жизни нa иppeлeвaнтнyю хyйню?

first you need an Adidas track suite and lots of vodka.

Yaroslavl
Based hehe

Russian movies with subtitles? Fuck if I know but that's how I learned English.

just practice haha

Russian subtitles or English?

first english of course
when that becomes easy, russian

Do you know any other languages apart from English (and, presumably, basic Gaelic)?

read the sticky :)

You really need someone to talk with in daily basis. My spoken russian is barely understandable since I just learned the grammar etc mostly

Кaждый дeнь читaй Meдyзy )

Doesn't work for English speaker in learning russian. It's a nice thing at the very beginning, when one has to 'tune' his ears for the phonetically different language and it's useless for further learning. It doesn't mean that the learner has to stop with listening, but rather never keep being attached only to it. One has to read a lot as the next step and that's the most important thing learner can master himself.
If he/she wants to get to the next stage - speaking - this is the only way.

>Meдyзy
what does this word mean?

I love russia and I want to learn russian

Read russian books and watch russian tv with subtitles. But don't watch news it's propaganda.

Oke, tell me, please, how shall one master speaking if he speaks to himself? my bad I didn't mention that one can get a tutor or even two, but it's an obvious thing,

Watch, movies, cartoons, read children's tales, watch news.

What? Sorry, I'm just learning the language.
Just thought I'd share some resources I'd found with my fellow Anons.
