The orthodox church "Sveta Nedelya" was the last keep of the rebels. Bashi-bazouk destroyed the school, where 200 people were burnt alive, hidden in the basement. Then they went straight to the church, where they dug holes into the fence of the yard and started to shoot at everyone there. The most terrifying chapter of the massacre happened on the night of 2 May 1876 in that very yard. On the morning of 3 May the Pomaks took the yard and advanced to the door of the church, but weren’t able to get in – the door was barred by the people inside.[13][14] The defense of the church held for three days, the Turkish were shooting ceaselessly at the villagers to make them surrender. Some tried to enter the church from the roof, but were unsuccessful, although they were able to shoot some of the people inside. There was no water in the church, so the barricaded had to resort to the oil of the lamps and the blood of their own dead. They tried to dig into the floor with bare hands in order to find underground water. On the third day the survivors decided to go outside, when they realized their fate was decided. Rhetorical question, I know you can't do your own research so I'll help you, Janissary corps itself, around 10,000 in the early 16th century, 13,000 in 1560, and then a big jump to maybe 30,000 at the start of the 17th century. Estimates are that around 7000 of these were taken through devshirme, while the others were recruited as prisoners of war.

Devshirme was fairly sporadic thoroughout its existence, and targeted specific areas. Very uncommon during the 15th century, a bit less uncommon during the 16th, and effectively gone during 17th. For the percentages taken, there's one 16th century edict, when it was effectively at its peak, that says one boy aged 14-18 from every 40 households (note that this is not the same as 1 in 40 boys). There are other sources that support the idea that 1 in 40 was a common number. For example, the memoirs of 15th century Janissary Konstantin Mihailović, who refers to boys taken from Ottoman lands as chilik, which seems to be from the Persian term for "one in 40."

So to sum it up, the Janissaries were very few in number compared to the (Christian Balkan) population. Propaganda tend to present things as if every family had to give one child to the Turks or some shit like that. Only genetically superior specimen were elected to be Jannisaries (a great honor), to be spared the never ending agony of living as wh*te chr*st*ans— on account of their great potential as gifted individuals.
