strategic reasons. ukraine is the soft underbelly of europe and russia. it has a lot of fertile land too. some of the best in the world in fact. why do you think the russians freaked the fuck out and annexed crimea when ukraine kicked out their russian puppet leader?
ukraine is in a good position to take out sevastopol and to cut of and encircle a large portion of russia. in defense the land is great for maneuver warfare. russia has an enourmous amount of tanks and afvs but russian doctrine is defensive they cant match natos airforce. thats why they have so advanced anti aircraft missile systems but those are defensive and while often mobile still pretty hard to use well in offense. in ideal circumstances for russia anti aircraft missiles (forgot how the russian ones were called) would be stationed all over ukraine and migitate the effects of nato air superiority to a large degree letting their superior number of mobile units work effectivly. with ukraine on nato/eu side they would have to send their tanks into areas where air coverage has not yet been established with superior enemy airforce presence. while also having a much wider front.

Instead Switzerland and the EFTA is in negotiations of giving the UK association status because with this and some legal massage they could keep their precious open border in Ireland with the EU without much hassle.

On a side note, making a political confederation so complicated and undemocratic that you can't leave once you have joined and you just have to run along with whatever happens forever is a stupid idea and truly German.

thats wrong though. starting the process of leaving was extremly simple its the incompetence of the brits that makes it hard.
and thats because they dont know what they fucking want, if they want close ties to europe, wich means open borders because ireland demands it to keep the good friday agreement intact. or no deal at all. europe being undemocratic or complicated has nothing do to with anything. its not much more complicated or less democratic than most goverments, not everyone lives in switzerland.

and as for switzerland rejecting laws, sure you can reject some. but due to your position surrounded by the eu from all sides there is still strong pressure to accept many treaties. its soft power, the eu cant order switzerland to do anything but its still very strong influence.

EU can't offer EFTA deals, EFTA can offer EFTA deals. EFTA won't accept UK as a full member because of fishing disputes with Norway and Iceland (fucking Vikings are fierce about this one), so Switzerland tinkers something with an "Association status" that can be done on the quick and has no lasting obligations for the UK but lets them safe face and buys time for a permanent solution.

Nobody wants an hard border in NI. The entire backstop the EU wants the UK to agree on is to avoid an hard border, it doesn't make sense for Europe to close it if there are other solutions
But if they crash out without a deal it wouldn't make sense for the UK to keep it open, it would be like no Brexit at all

In the EU the goals and opinions of a handful of large countries decide things. Smaller countries can be compensated or pressured where necessary to follow the motion. It's only natural.
Thus countries like Serbia can always join for the purpose of spreading the influence of those large countries.
Russia joining on the other hand changes the balance of power between the large influential members, which is not what they desire right now.
This is why Russia will never join the EU unless the geopolitics change.
