If you're a married middle-class couple, you really have no excuse to leave at least 30k to your kid. Less is understandable if you have multiple children.

It's unfortunate how much the family structure has decayed. Parents will have children and then just ignore them completely. Send them to school, send them to the x-box, send them to bed. The women in each household seem to hate all the other women in the other family households, and this keeps them all fairly divided. The men are usually brow beaten into submission, and don't even stand up to their wife when she's being a bitch. Children will naturally not think much of their parents because of this. They see them as an inconvenience. They've never bonded. They've never seriously worked together. All the child has to go by is the apathy and selfishness of his parents. Naturally, when the parents retire, the children don't want to live with them. Then the parents get sent to a nursing home.

I guess it's hard to blame anyone in this scenario. Society used to be oriented to help single-income households. Now that both parents are working; none of them feel a responsibility to work. This has expanded into the cultural zeitgeist, and even stay at home moms now have the same "why should I do it?" attitude that careerwomen have. Maintaining a healthy family is virtually discouraged in the modern set-up. Everyone is just taking the path of least resistance, and we can see how doing that in the current framework has ended up.

It's not your money. The whole idea of inheritance to me is fucking retarded. Your parents worked for their money let them spend it. And if they have more than their going to need, instead of dying and giving you a million bucks when you are 50 and already well off, why not give a nice big cheque when you graduate college.

If they raised you right, you already know what it means to work, and the value of the dollar. Now they can give you a boost so you can start a business or follow a career you're more passionate about instead of being concerned for your financial future.

My parents are pretty loaded with two juicy pensions coming in when they retire and have much much more than they ever need, but they are still really cheap with stuff they buy. They arent giving me shit right now but I always tell them to blow their cash because they earned it. And if they don't want to spend it when they retire, I could use some now because I could really use my own apartment (in and out of homeless right now) or be able to go to grad school

I too won't have any inheritance. The thing is if your parents live you no inheritance, you won't have a moral obligation to take care of them as they go old. Especially if they sell their house, you can expect them to pay for their own rent at an elderly house once they'll be done traveling.
In my case I'm basically on my own since my early twenties. Well, I grew up in a country where you can get free college AND scholarship (enough to rent a 10 m2 room and for food) if you get outstanding results in highschool.
Which I did, thus didn't get support from my parents. Once I had a financial trouble and the response was basically "take a loan already! You'll be rich with all your degrees anyway, what are you complaining for?"

I agree on that too. But my point is that they choose to do so. My personal conviction is something like "once you're a parent you live for your children".
That's why I have admiration for the immigrants who work their ass off to provide their children even when the children will have higher standards of living than them in all likelihood.
On the other hand, something like "our house and savings? Nah, it's ours. You're on your own" is kind of a dick move. That's legal but not very caring, assuming OP lived a "rightful life" and played by the rules of the social game. If so, why would he have to obey the rules any longer?
