Unironic answer: much better imo. It has improved visibly over the years, from me shitting in a pit in a rural area in 2007 to using a bidet in 2018. Bejing has improved a lot in terms of air quality, although there still are many days where the smog is visible. If you can't speak the language and look white, just follow a tour guide and be very careful of scams, and you'll most likely have a good time.
