Koreans were the only East Asians to develop an actual alphabet, which actually requires higher critical thinking rather than rote memory. Even to this day China and Japan still use an ideoglyph writing system and have an extremely hard time learning more developed languages.

I'm a big fan of Traditional characters and would much prefer it over Simplified, but even I have to admit that the comparison between 愛 and 爱 is misleading.
The heart 心 may be missing, but the strokes used are not entirely lost as it is used to form friend 友 instead.

The main problem I have with Simplified characters is that it attempts to replace characters with their shorthand variants.
For example, 门 is the shorthand of 門, which looks acceptable when written down but ugly and barebones when printed/typed.
I thought the brackets would have explained that it means 'girlfriend' in Chinese.
友 is used in that term, therefore I don't see why you'd find the implications of using that in 爱 to be gay.

The 云 one is kind of different because it started as a pictogram of clouds and was the original character for that word.
It was later borrowed phonetically for a word meaning "to say" that had the same pronunciation, and the character 雲 was created with the 雨 radical added to show that it was related to weather.

恋 only applies to the love between lovers. they often think the love with lower mind; the lower is as in lower lips.
So the 心 must be there.
While 愛 applies to the Love that never ask for return. Thats why the 心 places on the middle of body thats where heart is.
