Try to do different things with your friend Idk go to a bar or party. Even if you hate it at first you'll get used to it. Especially if you always go in the same places. Or try to talk with people at the gym maybe. In my experience the more you're familiar with the context the easier it gets to socialize.

Don't be so hard on yourself. And imo it's not so important what you say just add some stuff here and there until you know people better. Once you know them it'll be easier to talk, like I suppose you do with your friend

This is not great advice. These people are clumsy or awkward by default and don't know what they are doing wrong. People who are naturally skilled at social interaction don't need to do anything else than "to be themselves", but this will not apply to everyone

You have to start from the very beginning and get yourself into a circle of people who share at least in the slightest similar interests and goals, then start picking up social cues from the interactions you'll share with them and the people they'll introduce you. Fortunately, most people are capable of doing so and are far ahead from the helplessness state the Canadian spammer here is currently in.
