I'm also well aware that North Vietnam had a disproportional amount of aces (albeit because they were trained by Russians), but that doesn't discount the fact that AA was the main killer for aircraft during the war.

Don't forget that America puts a lot of effort into making our pilots the best in the world. Americans fly more hours each year than the Russians, who have to deal with funding problems and aircraft maintenance. Training is far more important than having the perfect aircraft because a trained pilot understands more about what he can and cannot do with his aircraft in a fight.

That's because what the Kremlin needs. Good air defense around it's capital so it feels comfortable in case of a conventional shooting war over the Russian border. But America doesn't need the superior missile air defense systems because we already have good geography by not having Russia be so close. Russia has enemies to worry about over it's border. American industries are isolated from conventional air attacks because we have the Atlantic, the Pacific, and Canada. Air defense has also been somewhat neglected because when has the last time America needed serious air defense to protect US from ground attacks. Should we expect Taliban to have serious air support? Air defense is a deterrence from air attack but it does not guarantee survival of the crews manning it. Aircraft have ways to counter air defense, so what's the point of overinvesting in said systems instead of proper air superiority?
