I like the region a lot historically. It's one of those places that grabbed influence from everything around them like said and worked on it. For one example they merged Indian mail armour with Spanish plate armour for some interesting combos.

They were as 'relevant' as they could be. Southeast asia is in a isolated part of the globe. Comparing them to a country like China is ridiculous because they have completely different circumstance but it's worth noting they developed their own seafaring culture unlike Japan which only really became """relevant""" a few centuries back.
