As the EU goes through further integration and possibly becomes a federal union, will there be one official language in the future?
What is the likelihood that it will be English? What about German?

I propose Swahili
its gonna be basque
The current setup in the EU is that all of the languages of each country are "official", but there are only three "working languages": English, German, and French. With the UK leaving, it could be reduced to French and German only, especially if they wanted to stick it to the Brits for leaving.
>But Ireland speaks English, too
No one cares about the Irish (see: Treaty of Lisbon, second vote)
On a related note, the two official languages of NATO are English and French, so if you tie everything together, the best candidate for a single continent-wide official language is French. Also, by not choosing German, you avoid all the "Fourth Reich/Germany won in the end" memes.
Somali
Unironically English for so many reasons
Esperanto
what it is now, English, German, French
Python
>will there be one official language in the future?
No. The "working languages" will be English, French and German just like today but all languages will remain official
albanian
>(see: Treaty of Lisbon, second vote)
Not what you think it means. They didn't vote twice on the same thing, but rejected a proposal and accepted another
Latin, if europeans waste 5 years of university for a job they won'r get, you might as well study latin while you are at it.
this. using languages to divide people up and cause meaningless wedge issues is pointless.
Most European children are already educated on English + 1 language. I'd imagine educated work will still be done in English.
>will there be one official language in the future?
no
why the fuck would there be?
One country, one language, one people. Isn't that how things work best?
The Scots BVLL language.
This. It's literally designed to be a combination of European languages.
correct
it looks like it will be Arabic
>the best candidate for a single continent-wide official language is French.
no shut the fuck you dumb french faggot. the days of your empire are over. speak english you frog-eating cocksucker
It’s already English. Both German and French suck.
>With the UK leaving, it could be reduced to French and German only, especially if they wanted to stick it to the Brits for leaving.
Working languages aren't meant to necessarily be the languages of the members. They are just the languages most widely spoken in the EU administration
English, no contest
>The current setup in the EU is that all of the languages of each country are "official", but there are only three "working languages"
you cannot have a cohesive European nationality without everyone speaking the same language.
Canada has a problem with the language divide and that's just two languages. It's on a multitude of levels worse in multilingual countries like South Africa.
One union. One language. There is no other way.
>you cannot have a cohesive European nationality without everyone speaking the same language.
Yes you can. See Switzerland or India
This is a moot point anyway because given current technology trends we are going to have real time translation pretty soon
Then there won't be a union unless they want to do a German union or something in the north
literally no one is interested in this fucking meme "language"
I'd rather speak french than made up bullshit
german and french.
english is a laughable language, only fit for peasants.
>you avoid all the "Fourth Reich/Germany won in the end" memes.
nobody care about poltard memes irl
why are brazilian posters so awful on this board?
Things worked out quite well for Switzerland
English but we remove the "th" sound.
How about you just learn to speak the language properly you frog-eating cocksucker?
fuck the EU, fuck the euro and fuck g*rmany
Mirandese.
Latin so that no one will be butthurt someone´s else language is the main one and it will have the benefit of filtering brainlets.
Norway has two and yet is a cohesive nation that's also incredibly rich.
norway has two official spelling systems for one spoken language
a better example would be switzerland
This
You forget that the most widely spoken second language in EU is still English, no matter what kind of bullshit arguments you make for French.
Swiss guy here living in America.
While Switzerland is a prosperous country, there isn't much cohesion between Swiss-Germans, Swiss-Italians and Swiss-French.
Internal stability doesn't mean they're not divided. When was the last time you've been to German part? And French? They're almost like two nations, just like in Belgium. The only difference is that they don't sperg out on each other.
>They're almost like two nations, just like in Belgium
that's the entire point of a federation you dumbass
They should be Hellenic Greek, Classical Latin, German, and English.
based
and most importantly, Brexit should happen, so that Scotland and Ireland join the EU, and then once reasonable government comes to England and Wales, they should each join the EU separately.
English is the lingua franca despite UK leaving the EU. Other candidate is French, but it'll never match English in how many people can utilize it.
Moving goalposts
For me, it's Finnish (Suomi)
What are you on about? There are literally no movements trying to create a european unitary state. Every movement that seeks to integrate further is federalist. OP's post literally said "federal union"
America started as a federation. Now the difference in culture between our states is entirely superficial, everyone is rootless and there are no fixed religious or ethnic demographics. The same will happen in Europe.
>Shouting and grunting at each other
Well you started as a much more homogeneous country from the beginning. A federal EU would just be like today's EU but with some things handled at a federal level
Was going to post this. English will always be the lingua franca, though French and German, German especially so could probably become noteworthy prospects in the future as well.
are you braindead? America has always been a very homogeneous settler colony that has formed very recently. The difference between US states has always been superficial compared to European countries, even when the US states were at peek cultural diversity.
Lingua franca is english already. Most of the people in the world in the world will learn it as a second native language soon
>Most of the people in the world in the world will learn it as a second native language soon
i hope so
I'm just saying don't be surprised when all major European cities look like New York or Los Angeles
Bai mesedez.
As an outsider, I support a federal EU, but I think it'd be better off with someone like Salvini or Farage or Thierry Baudet in charge rather than Juncker.
>Thierry Baudet
>Salvini
Lmao I wouldn't let him handle my apartment let alone a federation of 500+ million people
It's not about competence. It's about being based and redpilled.
truly epic good sir
updooted!
I'm glad you agree
Europe will never have a single primary language; the French would never allow it
>france
no such country
why does everyone assume there has to be one?
just leave all of them official, same way it is now
if all people in Europe were fluent in the same language, it would be good for business and for culture.
This.
However, English should be mandatory for every pupil in every country. It's what we use in international conversations.
We can just translate stuff
>However, English should be mandatory for every pupil in every country
It already is afaik
Just use Portuguese
it would make life easier for us and if you learned it it would allow you to go to Brazil and fuck the local shemale escorts so it's a win win
>if all people in Europe were fluent in the same language, it would be good for business and for culture.
hence why all business people speak english
A good post by a burger. Gotta mark this in the calender.
>Latin so that no one will be butthurt someone´s else language is the main one
Based
>and it will have the benefit of filtering brainlets.
EVEN MORE BASED
George Soros is fluent in Esperanto.
Hard pass.
Romanes eunt domus!
are there any people under 40 who aren't fluent in English?
Not in international business
I was actually appaled by the absolute state of your English skills when in Veneto. The medics and even the fucking doctor couldn't speak a single word.
There needs to be one European language like Esperanto
this is why it should be a national language.
Most Italians (especially boomers) suck at English
I blame our heavy usage of dubbing in movies
We don't need a single language. We can keep all other national languages and make them official. In fact the EU should and already does support the growth of threatened minority languages. I do however wish that French was used as the primary Lingua Franca instead of English like it used to be the case before the UK joined the EC. With the Brits out and the US being a de facto antagonist power now we should promote French as a mark of distinction, unfortunately the newest EU member states and the Sandi's (the biggest anglocucks) will resist to it.
why not German, or even Latin?
French sounds gay on men, has these weird, even gayer sign and I also suck at it. Hated it in school. While the French hate German and also suck at it. Yeah why the hell no Latin.
Because German = muh 4th Reich. Although I admit it would be funny making the Anglo menace seeth. Unfortunately we are way too cucked for this to happen.
>US being a de facto antagonist power
just pretend the third one didn't happen.
>Also, by not choosing German, you avoid all the "Fourth Reich/Germany won in the end" memes.
yeah but youll get those muh french aggresion its napoleon all over again meme
its big factor for stupid people and anti-eu politician will profit from it
Truly based
He is absolutely correct. And what is more: you have been since over a century. The only time where it seemed like not, in the Cold War, was, because you needed Euro vassal states against the Warsaw Pact
Niggers
>He is absolutely correct
He is absolutely wrong. Stop falling for the Russian disinfo.
>The only time where it seemed like not, in the Cold War, was, because you needed Euro vassal states against the Warsaw Pact
Supreme retard no less.
Latin is extinct. It's not really a spoken, in a way there isn't even a uniform standard phonology. It's difficult to learn, the grammar and vocabulary archaic. It's simply not fit as a modern lingua franca.
German lacks the clout French has. It's only spoken in a few countries in Europe and doesn't have demographics and soft power on it's side. Due to its archaic case system it's difficult to learn for many other European speakers.
French on the other hand is perfect. It has a strong tradition of being the language of diplomacy. 5/6 European Institutions are located in Francophone cities, so French already is a mandatory requirement for virtually all EU staff. It's distinct from English and it actually used to be the Lingua Franca before within the Montane Union and the EEC. Contrary to German it's actually a major world language that is spoken in diverse regions around the entire globe. French demographics are in way better shape than that of Germany and those of the French language itself as well with some experts projecting French to become the number 1 other tongue while eclipsing Spanish due to Africa's population boom.
and we can WE WUZ like theres no tomorrow
kys g*rman
The fact that we didn't federalize already is such a shame
Hopefully with the UK now out things will speed up
