Permanently annexing us to a nation that's mostly foreign to us and where there exist a significant amount of nutjobs (albeit small) who seem to resent us for no reason without giving us the option to leave is sort of a big deal. It's not just something we can just carelessly choose and revert to the other statuses if it's not to our liking.

You're splitting hairs, here. Puerto Rico is legally US territory, it's inhabitants are all US citizens from birth, they have the full protection of the US military. Again it's like Hong Kong. They consider themselves to have a separate identity from the rest of China, but as far as the entire rest of the world is concerned they were annexed in 1999.

You guys don't seem interested in leaving, last time I checked. Most of the polls show support for statehood or for continuing the current status. Also the Republicans who hate latinos would love nothing more than to kick Puerto Rico to the curb as an independent country and watch you turn into a slightly smaller version of the Dominican Republic. They desperately want you to leave. If PR had some kind of Brexit-style referendum tomorrow where 51% of the island voted for independence, Trump would throw a fucking parade.
