Ho Chi Minh was pro-American at some point.
He wanted to unite Vietnam on the same ideals as the founding fathers did in the US.

Buuuuut the US Govt decided to listen to the French and split the country.

Because HCM was a Soviet pawn. The best strategy would have been to promise HCM economic aid and development and have him abandon communism. That would have been a big win-win for both sides. Vietnam gets independence and a strong ally, the US gets to flip the finger to the Soviets and China.

Not like he had a choice desu, he wanted to unite the country and the ones willing to fund their war were the Chinese and then USSR.
