Germany conquers Poland.
Germany initiates peace with the Soviet Union, splitting Poland into two pieces - one to Germany, one to Soviet.
Germany breaks this peace pact during Operation Barbarossa and starts an offensive against Soviet.
Soviet was NOT acting in the defense of Poland, not when they split it with Germany, not when Germany broke the pact and invaded and not during the cold war.

Yet after war we recover Poland even better than it was before, while we could just grab it.

You violated their sovereignity, just like during the Russian empire. Doesn't matter what improvements you did or did not implement.
