Cars can't be welded up in a garage anymore, phones can't be rooted and battery swapped, kitchen appliances don't last a decade, and every 2cm long USB key comes in a plastic package fit for a dinner plate. Most of our consumer goods are also imported, and without the manufacturing industry of a denser, more populated country, we can't control these in full anyways.
Public transportation is also a headache, it can work in urban centres (Ottawa just got an LRT, Toronto's expanding streetcars, and I think Vancouver got a new system a few years back), but for the average person living in the surrounding suburbs, let alone 3-4 hours away from any major city, there is no option but to drive cars. Add to that trucks & SUVs dominating car sales because stacy needs to sit up high and cletus wants his lifted full-size to go on a dirt road once a year, and cars have a massive impact on Canada's emissions.
