I lived in Lachute and Val-d'Or for a bit so cretons make me feel nostalgic. Shame I was still too lazy to learn French.

it's funny that in some ways the Quebecois are much more similar to the English than French

how did you survive out there not speaking french? did you work in resource extraction?

I had a gf that would translate. I had a very crude understanding but had to rely on reading it. Hearing it sounded like alien gibberish and I didn't know when a word would begin or end.

would someone with rudimentary Spanish have an easier time with French?

yes that's sort of what helped and I studied latin in catholic school so I was able to kind of bullshit my way through things. I can't pronounce a damn word though.

no it won't help at all. i'm fully fluent in french and i can sort of read basic spanish, i can't understand when spoken at all. they're very distant languages
