Should shorting be allowed?

The goal of commerce and industry is supposed to be producing value and providing services. I believe bears are leeches, a net drain on society. Change my mind.

It seems pretty obvious that there are some negative consequences involved in these transactions.

Shorters destabilize markets, which is bad for basically everyone but them.

Shorting is the only thing that can save a market from crashing to 0.
When a market is crashing, everyone starts to sell. The max amount of money you can make going short is a 2x, which is decent but overall isn't amazing.
Short sellers will eventually want to cover in order to find better opportunities, and this means that there will be buyers thus saving a stock or a crypto from going to 0.
