College is not a meme.
Just study computer science and get a job.
The only people who say college is a meme are low IQ tradesmen or entrepreneurs (NEETs)
Why is college a meme?
Well looks like there's alot of people in cs
Pic related
College is a meme though. Why study computer science and go in debt when you can just study computer science for free and start freelancing for local companies? I don't know where you are at, but companies out here are almost begging for anybody with minimal scripting experience to come manage their networks - just come out this way and have a portfolio ready.
It's a meme for the 90% of people that don't get CS/engineering degrees
Although this is true too if you have the motivation
Easy to get in, harder to graduate. Dropout rates much?
Because nobody has the discipline to study maths outside of college.
You can become a code monkey for free but the maths part is taught best at college.
How come there's jobs in computer science when it's about to get totally outsourced to pajeets?
Currently studying CS at a university and only going $1500 into debt each semester for the next two years. More than half of my tuition is covered by Pell grant. $6k in debt is not bad for the Bachelors degree on a resume.
>Study comp sci
Dude, study it without college. Get some certs, build up a good github portfolio.
You don't need a degree to get into this industry. It won't hurt you, but it's not required and not really worth the money.
How do I do it for free?
Graduation is a joke at any basic state college, outside of maybe physics and certain engineering majors
>out here
Where is this fren?
You don't get certs for free. You have to pay for the tests. You can find materials online. And so long as you have a laptop that you can access the web on, you can install some shit like python and start programming ASAP. Reading and experimenting is how you get where you wanna go. You can either pay someone to help direct you, or use the wide array of free resources out here on the net.
What certificate would be worth getting, fren.
People have been saying that since before the dotcom boom. The fact is, code produced overseas either costs the same as local, or is VERY poorly made.
I paid off my $20k in loans in 4 years. I could've done it much quicker, if I had shopped less luxuriously at the grocery store/dispensary and eating out.
Certs aren't really a thing people respect in the software development field.
What you trying to do? For entry level shit (ie tech support) you should get A+ and Net+. Once you have done that for a while and it's no longer a challenge, go for you CCNA and CCENT. Linux+ and Security+ are nice too. Then go for a Sys Admin job. If Sys Admin isn't your speed, go for DBA or Net Admin. If you are more into programming, then that's largely another route altogether. But a background in Systems or Network administration will help you as a developer anyways.
how much programming do I need to know to land a job even with a CS degree?
Oh I know. It's more for the hardware field. In the software field people care more about your code portfolio.
Enough to pass the hiring exam and do the work they give you. Otherwise you will get fired.
when did you graduate?
Yes. But typically if you pass their hiring questions/exam, you're well above the brainless work they're going to give you. (Assuming some giant company).

TFW when you're an electrical apprentice making 19+ hourly, and will top out at 42 an hour in 4 years as a foreman electrician, all on top of being worth 60k (around 25 in savings, 5 exact in checkings, and the rest in crypto and boomer stock markets)
Don't know my IQ, but I did drop out of Uni and said fuck a boring stem degree where I have to use my brain for kikes. I rather do labor, make 80k a year and think for myself on my own business related ventures
You probably can't fathom that some tradesmen prefer an easy, comfy career, you narcissistic psuedo intellectual, software engineering NPC
This is a Jow Forums meme. They don’t actually have jobs.
just started 2nd year
I can write an okayish amount in Java, maybe more if I really make an effort and try to learn more algorithms, but nothing spectacular
Also know some C

What kind of programming does a programmer usually do in their work either way? Is it like making super advanced AI or just simple coding routines?
Usually you won't be making some super advanced AI.
Usually you get a subset of a larger project assigned to you to work on. At my job recent projects have mainly been dumb stuff like scripting data migrations from one database to another type of database or modifying code created by other companies to fit the needs of my organization. It really depends on the job, in all honesty. And a lot of the time you may have to learn entirely new languages on the fly if management suddenly decides that's what they want.
learning new language won't be hard. I've already figured out the fundamentals of C just this week, and I am considering buying a book for JavaScript and Python too.
I would learn .NET, SQL, C# and HTML later on in school
Honestly, I always though programming jobs were quite laidback and is not as scary as it sounds
