Even investing in something like gold or silver would be regarded as eccentric here because most people can't conceive of the possibility that GBP/USD/fiat currency isn't all it's cracked up to be. The possibility that governments aren't these omniscient or even benevolent institutions that have their best interests at heart isn't something most people have even considered. I sold my house, broke up with my fiancee and bought a small townhouse in 2016 that is almost paid off by crypto. I have about $350K portfolio besides that and have gotten laughed at by /biz for being a retard for having so little at 45. I don't know much about the Aussie system but when social security was started in the US there was something like 5 workers for every retiree (or somewhere around there). Now the bottom half of the population pyramid is at most the same size as the old and usually a lot smaller in pretty much every industrialized country. This is why Japans population has been such an issue as well as being used as justification for refugees in Europe, the whole thing is a ponzi that needs to be fed from the bottom up and the birth rates aren't high enough to cover the costs of the elderly. The likelihood of the system still functioning when we're all old is slim to none, as more literal boomers start retiring the demands placed on the system will likely send the whole house of cards tumbling down.
