Welcome to /pmg/ - Edition #10 >Introduction This is an inclusive thread for all precious metals discussion that pertain to investing in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, for coins, rounds, and bars. Other metals (like copper) are welcome as well. Physical possession is always recommended. Please keep discussions civil and evidence-based, and refrain from unnecessary ad hominem arguments. If you prefer crypto over PM, that's fine. If you prefer one PM over others, that's fine too. Just remember, all precious metals are precious and have their rightful purpose in both industry and investment. A good strategy should be to diversify and have as many PM's as possible.

can you point in the articles where it says in WHAT FUCKING YEAR astroid mining will be accomplished?
James Jackson
>mining.com/luxembourgs-space-agency-ready-lift-off/ >The announcement was followed by the government’s acquisition of a major stake in US-based asteroid miner Planetary Resources for €25 million ($17.4 million). The goal of the investment is to help the Redmond, Washington-based firm launch its first commercial asteroid prospecting mission by 2020.
Jackson Nguyen
This. We spent $10 Billion to send a couple guys to the Moon and they only brought back a few kilos of rocks (not even PM or anything useful beyond the scientific value), and that was 50 years ago. Humans haven't been to Mars or even the Moon since.
Sebastian Sullivan
humans arent going to asteroids either. robots are. falcon heavys can more than carry enough weight, especially if they are near earth astroids like they are planning to hit.
Henry Butler
>send mutli-billion robot to mine asteroid >drill breaks first week >nothing comes back kek
Lucas Butler
>billions are anything to these companies. know how many spacex rockets have failed/blownup?
Anthony Watson
Hopefully this thread doesnt die like yesterday. I've got $5k that I like to buy some PM with I'd like to get some opinions on 1) what might be a good ratio of silver and gold or if I should just stick with one or the other. (I'm leaning towards silver given the price) 2) does anyone have experience with wholesalecoinsdirect .com? They seem to have decent prices from what I've seen so far jMbullion also seems reasonable 3) does it make sense to get mostly 1oz rounds and then a few 5-10oz bars? What would you go with? also I have a 401k and an IRA but I dont understand that shit and am not making much from it. so I'm hoping with this small investment and then each month or so buy a hundred dollars or more of PM will help me in the future
Kevin Moore
PM is kill.
Julian Davis
4k silver 1k gold, or all in silver due to the ratio
dont buy rounds. get bars and coins
Jonathan Smith
why no rounds? what about junk silver?
Xavier Price
Thanks I'll keep that in mind. I saw on kitco they are selling 100 1oz silver imperfect goverment coins for $1571 does condition really matter when most places seem to only care about melt value?
Jace Gonzalez
I bought 100 oz of silver last month.
Jace Lee
For $5k in an IRA I would say 2 gold eagles and 8 tubes (x20) of silver eagles. That's 50-50 gold silver (personally I'd go all gold but that's just me). Don't waste your money buying overpriced coins, and never ever ever buy bars, lot of fakes out there.
Zachary Ramirez
you always sell rounds at spot, unless its a premium round like Engelhard Prospectors.
Silver Maples and Eagles, its easy to ask for a premium when you sell. they are vary liquid and not stupid looking like zombucks or artbars.
Carson Cruz
If for an IRA eagles are better than rounds. If not for an IRA, I would say just get APMEX silver rounds. Junk silver is called junk for a reason, stay away from it.
Colton Davis
What is the reason? t. newbie
Asher Smith
because it's usually coins in poor to avg condition and then you've got to keep track of like six different coin types that each have a different amount of silver. it's much easier to say oh I have 100oz of silver eagles than x dimes, y quarters, z halves, etc. and calculate the silver content of all those coins, plus they are not IRA eligible either
Jacob Young
Go heavy on silver right now. Get 1 oz gold and 200 oz silver thats my suggestion. Ebay is a good place to start you can get ebay bucks which is 10% most of the time but you have to be savy and look in the section of world coins. Theres a few deals in there from tine to tine and when you combine in with ebay bucks its even better. Convert ebay bucks every 3 months to gas cards bought on ebay, basically same as cash.
Jordan Adams
>putting silver in an IRA Is this a good idea? I just did a small amount of research which suggested that you aren't allowed to physically hold it. Better to keep stocks and other financial assets in the IRA, and buy silver after you have reached the yearly contribution limit. Unless I am confused?
Bentley Ortiz
I'm not sure about IRA's desu, I would suggest asking a financial advisor about that. All the PM I have is securely hidden in a safe spot.
Caleb Bennett
none of the shit ITT is a good idea in 2018
Charles Torres
OK - it's just that keeping your silver in an IRA seems to completely defeat the point
>yes, of course we have your silver! You can't have it until you retire, but we would never think to lend it out or gamble it as collateral for something or do anything like that.now stop asking questions and get back to work goy
Lucas Watson
yeah, my personal philosophy is if you don't hold it you don't own it
Jace Young
has anyone bought from Wholesalecoinsdirect.com it seems like for $5k I could get about 300oz silver and 1oz of gold compared to ampex jmbullion and kitco where it would be about 200oz silver 1oz gold
Caleb Diaz
I haven't heard of that place before but I'm not sure how there could be that much of a difference
Jaxson Ortiz
I am too busy wagekeking to sit on the porch with a shotgun
Explain to me how the heliocentric model makes any sense in under 100 words. I'll wait Flat water = Flat Earth. You literally will not be able to debate me if you so choose to.
Sorry you're such a brainlet you fell for some dumb kike story your grade school teacher told you about gravity.
>Junk silver is called junk for a reason its what you want in your trunk. >its gov issue >higher divisibility than eagles >known i say again. when people want silver, they want something they trust and will pay the premium
Adam Ward
Hey man I have ordered from them before and they are legit. Got a really good deal on silver eagles in 2013 (at the time)
Blake Morgan
Threadly reminder that precious metals dumped harder than stocks during the last recession.
Jaxson Green
I have several hundred Monero. Would now be an OK time to trade some of it for a few ounces of gold? Looking to diversify my holdings, as I've been all in on Monero for a while now.
At the same time, Monero seems to have a much bigger upside. But now that I own 40 oz of silver coin, precious metals are becoming almost like an addiction to me. And I don't own any gold.
Noah Wood
Just partition your bags:
>Sell some XMR >Use some to buy back more XMR w/ BTC >Use some to buy Fiat
>Use some Fiat to buy Gold >Use some Fiat to buy back BTC
Rinse wash repeat etc. DCA
Henry Richardson
due to Poe's law I'm not sure if this is a joke or for real
>no serious investor even considers it as an option then why was the premium for it higher than the damn rent 2008-20012?
Nathan Martin
If you want to debate me I'm willing to have a conversation but I don't want to spam the thread so I won't start it. Let me know your questions but I'm not joking. Its fucking flat. Prove me wrong if you can.
If you need to link some random website to prove something you cannot prove it.
Nathaniel Reed
So basically what you are saying is there is a huge market in buying junk silver and smelting it into bars. Got it.
Jose Long
FACT: the preshy mets expended in drills, space launch, and hardware exceeds the retrievable metal quantity in any near-earth asteroid.
Yeah its also illegal to infringe the 2nd amendment nigger but I can't carry a pocket nuke around.
Liam Evans
Gday fellas Is there a reason of having physical metal besides feels good factor?
Samuel King
so is APEMEX /our/ exchange?
Bentley Gonzalez
>but I don't want to spam the thread so I won't start it. Good, keep your bullshit theories out of this thread. This is for PM only. You're the one who first injected the topic in this thread for no reason. Go to /x/ for that kind of crap.
Kayden Cooper
APMEX is good, but if you're paying with CC then LibertyCoin has lower prices. Also, APMEX has started enforcing state sales tax for a few different states so that might also be a factor for some.
Jaxson Gonzalez
pls respond
Robert Sullivan
Yes. In crises the metal you own but don't hold has the tendency to disappear.
Nathaniel Hernandez
Wrong. It's illegal to melt copper pennies.
Landon Richardson
>the metal you own but don't hold has the tendency to disappea has this actually happen b4? Im thinking about buying silver bricks, you goys hold any? I saw some cleaning/maintaince shit on APMEX user above posted does it require much care?
John Sanders
stay away from bars, only buy coins or rounds
Levi Anderson
thats what ppl been saying and I dont understand why??? Its more expensive /oz is it not?
Gabriel Bell
there's a lot of counterfeit bars out there, even some that make their way into the inventory of reputable dealers. plus large bars aren't divisible and have a harder time finding someone to buy it if you need to sell quickly for whatever reason
Lucas Moore
I c, so in the end overpay for coins is a small price to pay for amount of potential problems you have with bars, thx for useful info man I suppose with coins still heavier the coin the better
Gabriel Clark
Well, coins are more expensive than bars yes, because they are issued by govts, but you can get rounds for basically the same price as large bars. Although with coins like ASE's you'll get more back when you sell them as well, so the buy/sell spread usually comes out to be the same.
Adrian Cruz
yes
Ryder Gutierrez
oh really? I thought you can only sell for a value of a metal and the fact its coin has little benefits perfect, tanks
also one more question, I dont feel like putting a lot in metals in one go is buying few coins per month reasonable way to do this?
Asher Davis
>I thought you can only sell for a value of a metal and the fact its coin has little benefits No, ASE's will always have more resell value over rounds or bars. Plus being issued by a govt has added benefit and they are legal tender
>also one more question, I dont feel like putting a lot in metals in one go is buying few coins per month reasonable way to do this? It's perfectly fine to buy as little or as much as you go, there's no right or wrong answer
Dylan Gonzalez
What does ASE stand for, complete noobie here...
Noah Moore
ASE = american silver eagle AGE = american gold eagle
Ian Morales
Ooooooooh, yeah, I'm europeen
Tyler Cook
Oh, in that case you would probably want some different ones. Austrian philharmonic's are very nice.
A while back I saw a post about testing authenticity by analyzing the sound frequency of silver/gold coins does anyone know what im talking about? I cant find the post and am not having luck searching.
Cameron Robinson
It's probably just one posting like crazy thinking biz can sway the gold market. Topkek
Yes, the AGE is 22kt like the Krugerrand. I actually prefer .916 because they are much more durable. 24kt .999 scratches way too easily. Make sure you get airtights or lighthouse capsules to protect it
David Robinson
thats a good point actually For some reason I still want to grab a large amount of silver idk why, gold surely has better performance
Luis Collins
Get a tube of silver phils, it never hurts
Liam Brown
Im bothered by the fact that golden coins lose half of what silver coins lose if sold second after purchase
Caleb Gray
huh?
Isaiah Howard
well if I check a sell price on gold and silver coin, roughly speaking gold coin sell price is 8ish % lower than buy price but silver is 16% lower than its buy price
Aiden Cox
oh yeah, you'll get screwed if you sell silver back too soon, I found that out the hard way
Bentley Brooks
What are the most reliable ways to spot chink counterfeits?
Connor Collins
See
Connor Gonzalez
but like... why should I buy silver i first place then? If gold is superior for trade back whats the purpose of holding silver, it usually moves relatively close to gold price moves.
I want silver just cause but my desire feels unreasonable
Matthew Anderson
I personally wouldn't buy it now, I'm all gold and platinum, but having some silver isn't a bad idea in case it goes back up
Alexander Ramirez
I have pretty much my life savings in gold on Uphold (an exchange). I don't like the idea of physically carrying it, so I have it sitting on the exchange and it's linked to the price of gold. Fifteen oz
I don't know how the fk they do it but they're partnered with Brave/Eich so I trust them. When you withdraw, it is a USD withdrawal linked (at the time) to the price of gold. Am I retarded? Am I really supposed to start physically holding this shit?
