You can chase gains on other coins but ultimately, and I don't see this changing for the foreseeable future, BTC dictates what the market does and how much each other coin is worth.
ETH isn't going to flip it, Btrash isn't going to flip it.
XRP isn't even going to flip it.

Learn to read charts, look for volume and see how they stack up to candles (green/red).

Especially these two advices are important! No matter what you think where the price will go, if you are up a good amount, at least pull out your initial investment. Also set yourself sell points, for example sell 10% of stack at $5 etc.

There's many choices. I used Coinbase as a starting platform for buying BTC and ETH.
I mainly use Binance and IDEX these days. They've worked well enough thus far.
Haven't used Kraken/Bittrex/other ones, so no comment about those.
