As has become clear to most followers by now, this project was one of those marketing white papers that collected a huge amount of money but didn't have a clear vision of how to get anywhere.
They've focused most efforts (which isn't much, apparently) on scaling research that may not be going anywhere any time soon, and probably isn't even that important at this point. Building an exchange network for liquidity was an afterthought and has probably barely even started. As others said, much is being outsourced.
They collected a lot of money, but if they start buying up shit exchanges too you can see how those could dry up quickly. Since they have no formal obligations to anyone, most remaining funds could also be funneled to Omise if this research stuff fails.
They're slow, mismanaged, have no technical solutions to most problems. This thing will probably limp along for another year or two, possibly with one of their many intermediate prototypes like Tendermint, Cosmos, PoA manifesting but failing to deliver any notable staking returns, while the competition makes better progress and the first lawsuits or unfavorable SEC rulings on their token come in.
