There’s a book called Coming Apart: The State of White America. Basically two white Americas are forming, and they interact less and less. On one hand you have your rich white urbanites, on the other you have poor and middle class. The result is a destruction of social mobility and a de facto caste system. And it’s all driven by the fact that rich white people dont want to be seen as racist to non-whites, so they lean too heavily on merit as a substitute for racism (bc be honest it is).
Good book. You want merit to matter, but you also need social cohesion, which is why pure merit is not workable long term.
