He's right in that Chainlink is essential to integration with the old world. This will star the process of migration that will end eventually, making chainlink obsolete.
If all relevant data is onchain, why do you need oracles in the first place.

Oracles offload calculations off-chain.
This has many advantages:
- more security/privacy (better obfuscation)
- less strain on the underlying blockchain
- requires only a very simple underlying blockchain
- the system is blockchain agnostic (among others meaning the network of oracles can be infinitely larger than if it served only a single blockchain, and in decentralization bigger is in itself always better)

In general; having a separate oracle layer allows both the blockchain and the oracle layer to be MUCH more flexible, reach their full potential (in terms of size, efficiency, simplicity, modularity, ...), have much more streamlined development, etc.
These advantages will never go away.

Sure, players could create/use a blockchain that integrates oracles, but it would be an unnecessarily involved and costly effort. Especially when public solutions will undoubtedly offer much greater ease of use, cost savings, and security due to the much greater consensus.
And then there's the peer-to-peer aspect: regular private persons are still very much the majority, and when they start using smart contracts for things like banking, insurance, etc., they will make many of the parties that would favor using private blockchain/oracle solutions (banks, insurance companies, ...) obsolete.

For instance: remember that Bitcoin has been seeing very intense development over these past many years, and not only is it still not anywhere near where it should be to handle basic things like traffic, but the development has also split off into multiple directions because of disagreement.

This is why blockchain/DLT and oracles will likely always remain separate.

If blockchains end up being really that much better at handling and securing networks of any sort (banking, video platforms, social media) then there will be probably better long-term solutions that don't rely on chainlink but have other decentralized consensus, meaning there won't be off-chain data in the first place, most data will be created and stored on-chain to begin with.

For example a decentralized AI network could compute many sorts of data like weather or other stuff and that data would already be validated on-chain.

This is a dumb bitcoin core reasoning. I am not a fan of Bcash people but they have a point, you can't just assume that blockchains aren't supposed to scale and we just plaster more and more off-chain layers therefore reducing security and decentralization and in the end just recreating old school centralized networks.

Yes chainlink could be obsolesced when everything is moved on chain. But do you even realize the amount of full societal overhaul that would take? The fabric of companies, governments, and capitalism itself would need to be rewritten. And even if that pipedream were to to occur it'd be decades down the road, more than enough time for chainlink to serve as the "bandaid", as the Enigma team so eloquently put it, that lets smart contracts be usable in the next 5 years without having to rebuild the internet.

Chainlink will always have a use. Large companies that aren't already on the cutting edge don't like updating old but working infrastructure. More like 30 years for everyone to get onboard with their legacy systems. Even then, block chain still needs a way to communicate outside of it, which is where oracles will come in. You can't funnel the entire internet into block chain.

Very helpful post. Thanks. Have been following CL for a while but only recently came to understand the significance of these (ironically, partly from reading about (maybe) CL competitor Oasis labs).

I understood the point of Chainlink to be focused on “real world data” e.g. “what is the price of zinc on date x” or “how much rainfall was there in region y during month z”. Yes, those are HUGELY important use cases — for a derivatives contract or for crop insurance respectively.

BUT, I did NOT also see, until recently, that an oracle is ALSO hugely helpful for handling commercial contracts that involve, say, lots of confidential data that you don’t want to put on the Distributed Ledger. Furthermore, they allow trusted computation to happen OFF chain, which is hugely important for scaling. Makes me even more bullish for chainlink actually. Very hard to be patient, desu.
