Guns were legalized in the past in Brazil. The government then applied immense restrictions on their ownership over the years (with a massive anti-gun campaigns starting in 2002), and guess what, murders shoot up instead of decreasing since then.

Brazil's problem with crime is way too complex to be solved only by self-defense mechanisms for the population, but these mechanisms are already a start and most importantly, are a basic right. Not letting the average Brazilian have a gun for self-defense when there's 70k murders per year and criminals have military grade weaponry is the most insane and barbaric thing imaginable. It's like throwing someone in a den of Lions without anything to defend himself.

This without mentioning the fact that the police is inefficient (only 10% of all murders are solved in Brazil) and the government overly corrupt and repressive (thus just as dangerous as standard criminals).

Legal and facilitated ownership of guns is just one of the basic steps Brazil needs to take to stop being a shithole.

And btw, more than 70% of Brazilian crimes (especially as far as murders go) is caused by organized criminal factions, not by random subhumans.
