very similar mechanism to fomo, although even dumber.
You see something mooning and you want in despite elementary logic and statistics would imply that it's on average much dumber than buying even the most obvious scamcoin that recently crashed.
Lotto tickets when jackpot is massive are quite literally always on average worse than on your regular day, it's as simple as it gets really yet at some point (of low enough probability to win) those who buy disregard statistics and just buy "because theres a chance".

Essentially the logic follows that while smaller amounts are just as likely to be won statistically, people that don't habitually play the lottery ignore it because it's just background noise of some rando making money. When the lottery balloons up to ridiculous numbers, it self-advertises, and news media tends to advertise as well. People hear about it more often. Workplaces chatter. It surrounds them.
The odds are the same, but they're thinking about it more. Eventually somebody will win it, right? And it'll be so much money... Well, the odds aren't any better, but for THAT MUCH, $2 doesn't hurt, right? I'll skip the coffee at lunch and just buy one. Just in case, you know?
