It's just a tv show that's animated and in another language. In the west people gravitate towards endless police procedurals and medical shows, in the east they gravitate towards high school shows about young girls and mecha fighting. Just like with western television, there are animes out there absolutely worth watching and are downright kino like Legend of the Galactic Heroes for example.

I think I've de-matured in my tastes as I grew older.
