Renewables are up about 20% across the industry. It's still tech-based, so that means constant failure but if one company makes a significant success it's a game changer. I've seen a TED talk where a guy was claiming that if solar was efficient enough we simply wouldn't have to pay for energy anymore, energy would just be like amazon's book industry.
With how china has an economic deathgrip on the entire world and is only beefing it's infrastructure to take on more(belt and road project) we should be throwing money down the renewable hole, gladly, because the overall advantage for everyone once we have significant success is worth every penny.
This is why government has been harping climate change and gathering funding, because science funding isn't that great outside of the medical industry and renewables need a huge economy behind them before we'll see the significant payoff we're hoping for.

I'm all for depending more on american oil and natural gas. America has more oil under it than the sauds, if we wanted to we could tank the price and up pollution in the short term but long term invest in renewables because it's too dangerous on the macro scale not to control our energy consumption, for the difficulty of getting oil is simply already far too fraught with low margins and high costs. If we were operating on renewables then the business model would outright disappear and you'd have more companies like Arcadia Power involved.
