Anyone has a Cryptosteel wallet? Any good or bad experiences with it?

Any good padlocks anyone would recommend to go with it?

great combined with ledger nano s

this is not secure you numb skull
> encrypt your wallet file with a password and remember the password

>someone cracks your password with software
>not having a physical password in the form of a padlock that can't be cracked by software

you dumb fuck, you can brute force both

but I can come over kill your ass, have a metal detector and find that one, with the password I have no way to get it

Physical security is significantly harder to crack. The fact that you'd have to breach multiple layers of that BEFORE you even try to 'crack' a padded cryptosteel makes it much more safe, in addition to all of this being highly nonstandard - minimalizing the chance of that happening.
Cracking regular passwords on computers is commonly done.

Don't get a cryptosteel wallet. If it's subjected to fire it will bend out of shape and the letters fall about rendering your pk useless.
Emboss your own metal plate instead: youtube.com/watch?v=TrB62cPPNxc

brilliant

That cryptosteel is soooooo gaaaaay.

Just fucking write your passwords down in a few hidden random places like inside some books. First thing someone finds that gay thing is oh this password on that gay metal thing must be important. Ok tell us or we cut your cock off with it.

it is not you idiot, no passwords are cracked, it is always a trojan or social engineering

Physical security is only possible if you have explosives rigged to the it.

All I have to do is call the coppers and swear up and down you have crack in your safe I saw it there, then just bribe a copper and make the thingie dispersal. I don't even have to bother facing you.

>if you are subjected to fire...

Kys...

I don't understand. A fire is something that can happen in your house or at the place where you store your wallet. What's wrong with being cautious?

Niggers bust open locks all the time. I've never heard of one using rainbow tables to crack an encrypted wallet file.

that's why you should always keep another copy of your private key words somewhere else in another location, maybe your parents or a bank vault, which needs a separate key you keep online somewhere (I keep mine in the cloud) that you need to figure out the key words, so that individually either are not enough to unlock the wallet.

Still, many more steps to go through, with a very real threat of physical safety for you. Guess you like to have your shit caved in, so it makes no difference for you.

>crack in a safe
>implying the first thing the police would do is to break into a safe at your whim
how stupid can you be?

Just remember your 24 word seed using basic memory techniques.

Is there a utility that turns wrod seeds into raw private keys?

Monero uses seed words by default. I'm sure there are programs to do it for bitcoin but you're better of just putting it all in xmr anyway. Very comfy hold.

Yeah no, I know. But I don't get why that guy told me to kms when we're discussing hardware wallets and I suggest to stamp your own metal plates instead of buying overpriced meme wallets that will bend out of shape and lose your key.

got me thinking.. just go to your local mall or tourist trap areas and find those vending machines that does dog tags and keychain ring it.

Yeah wtf. If fire isn't something you're worried about just get some pic related. Padlocking your keys is a meme when you can pocket the thing that's locked.

If your response to metal-hardware wallets is that they bend if subject to scorching temperatures, then you're setting the bar very high. Higher than any other hardware wallet type can come even close at matching.
Thinking this was the reason for the visceral reaction to this guy, the perception of nitpicking.

interesting

>dog tags
brilliant

They'd probably get wrecked in a fire.

True, the'd be very fragile. Easy to manufacture thou.

*bumps head*

Urmm... what was my seed again? I can't remember how to spell proper either..

It's cheap af, make several extras in fact and store away in a fireproof container/safe/lockbox since its small and thin to pancake a bunch together too.

Its a lot of characters for a dog tag and you give away your key to whoever makes it for you. Easier to just stick some paper into pill capsules. If you want anything more durable than that do the metal stamping thing from the video.

Split your seed into parts and strategically place them around the country/world like horcruxes as a last resort.

Would surgically implanting some capsule with a private key inside be feasible?

>Its a lot of characters
True, I wouldn't put all the phrase on a single, tag, but multiple tags with mixed words thrown in. So you would need to know which row, column and start end sequence if split into 4 or more tags with random words mixed in.
>and you give away your key to whoever makes it for you
Those vending machines are touch screen. diy.

I still wouldn't take the chance that it's not being logged. It's probably more risky than giving the job to a human even.

But you see, those commercial steel wallets explicitely advertise as being "fire proof" when in fact that's bs.
Take a look at medium.com/@lopp/metal-bitcoin-seed-storage-stress-test-21f47cf8e6f5 for a very detailed testing range. Cryptosteel specifically states to be fire proof up to 1200°C/2100°F which is true because the material is not destroyed, but it still bends and makes your seed unusable. A regular house fire will reach around 1100°F, which is enough to destroy the readability of your seed.

valid point

For one thing there's no way you could diy it so there's a good chance a third party steals your key.

>Anyone has a Cryptosteel wallet? Any good or bad experiences with it?

I just got a stainless steal plate...engraved it myself

>Any good padlocks anyone would recommend to go with it?

The majority of padlocks can are easy enough to pick/bypass/cut off. What would you secure it in i.e what container?
t. ex locksmith

ITT: the reason why we all need a reliable, efficient, and low-cost custody company to come into the crypto market

>What would you secure it in i.e what container?
Are there any good, secure containers for credit-cards or metal engravings?

Lol just wait, custody companies will fuck up at some point. Only reason they can exist for now is the fiat ponzi insurance backing them up.

>trust others with your seed
Fuck off. when this shit started ppl used to say 'be your own bank' not leave your details/coins with others & hope for best!

Be responsible for yourself!

You probably want a massive safe or just hide the metal card really well, depending on your assessment of threats.

Alright, thanks

>engrave your own plate
>hacker intercepts the software's request for the machine to start engraving
>hacker now has your keys
Neat

YER' A WIZARD SATOSHI

Watch this video

>machine to start engraving
>not engraving it yourself using a hammer metal typefaces

>machine
What? Did you even watch the video? He used manual stamping tools and a hammer to emboss the plates by hand.
I mean most people on Jow Forums (or in crypto in general) probably have sub 4 figure portfolios and don't care at all and that's why such bullshit products are being sold, but I wouldn't risk my stuff with some flashy toy and I can't help myself but warn people everytime someone suggests these shit wallets.

Cryptosteel still seems valid, just not extremely fire resistant. Still quite durable and something that doesn't require blacksmith skills.
Still better than Ledger Nono

>Are there any good, secure containers for credit-cards or metal engravings?
Not really user...the reality of locks are if someone wants in...they will get in. Locks just make it difficult/keep honest people honest.

I keep mine in a relatively shite fire proof safe that is well hidden & not kept in the house.

The best safe would be a floor safe as it only allows access to one side of the safe & surrounded by concrete. A lot of 'safe crackers' simply drill a hole in the back or side of the safe & manipulate the lock from the inside (i have never done this BTW). But again if someone wants in a drill will get you in to any lock...its the ultimate locksmith tool.

I engraved mine by hand....

Yes, absolutely. It's an okay way to create a cold wallet. But people need to realize that it's not the Endlösung for the Storagefrage.

1 more thing...I have not seen the cryptosteel personally but that is where i got my idea from. I would say for the price of it you could do a better job yourself. The stainless plate that i chose is thick! i engraved deep into it. Probably deeper than the cryptosteel is thick....get a Dremal it should do the trick..I used a specialist air powered tool.

>falls down
>breaks into pieces
>letters eveRywhere

Fuck this crypto steal my password.

There are 100s of fun ways to store your nano passwords. Maybe make an email to yourself that includes sentences with your paraphrase. Break up a private key into bits and put them in somewhere online in some way.....never rely on one location. Maybe make your own passphrase words and turn them into bible passages etc... Always at least two locations ...there are so many better ways than putting it on a thing that stands out like a sore thumb.

This is what it will look like to use this device

why did they think little sharp metal pieces would be a good idea?

just encrypt your private key with PGP and store it in a USB stick somewhere
make 2 ~ 3 copies in different places just in case

Satoshi herself wouldn’t be subjected to this level of sophisticated hacking.

good idea so now pajeet has my key thanks to the keylogger he got me with.

Where's a good place to get a eth paper wallet, I don't trust metamask/hardware wallets and wanna get off FUNDSAFU exchanges

Can't hackers just spend all day trying random word variations and randomly get access to wallets? What's stopping them from cracking wallets like this?

>What's stopping them from cracking wallets like this?
time

>github.com/vkobel/ethereum-generate-wallet
I use this on my Ubuntu system. It's a simple and understandable script that generates an eth wallet (private key/public key/address). It doesn't use any super-special external utilities/libraries and can be used off-line without issue, so it can be considered relatively safe.

You can create a wallet offline ? Dont you need to sync it with blockchain after creating ?
