The society is sick and the majority of people are probably unable to use reason or come to any notion of truth at all. If the majority say 2+2=5 and 'up is down' they will probably just kill and lynch mob anyone who disagrees with them. Once "decentralization" completes its course and there is a breakdown of the ability to impose a mono-culture and monolithic, standardized belief systems on people (as television, mass media, national news papers, mandatory state education and radio allowed), society will break apart into "filter-bubbles". Self-contained, self reinforcing belief systems, appied through peer pressure, orchestrated by sociopaths and which will often have no relationship to reality. Essentially Tumblr, when Otherkin, Dragonkin, gender fluidity and other types of mental illness began incubation and proprogation across society.
Right now New York State has declared that using the wrong gender pronoun (which does not correspond to a person's biological gender) is enough to jail and throw someone in prison and fine them hundreds of dollars. Tomorrow, people will be able to self identify as Dragons (dragonkin), Otherkin (other species) and if you do not acknowledge that they are not dragons or other species, you will similarly be thrown in prison and fined. Every extremist and militarized minority will be entitled to whatever rights they can gain through force.
And for the majority, since they are animals, driven by emotion and peer-pressure and not by reason or any higher principles, will inevitably self-destruct and splinter into millions of independent self contained (and self-destructive) belief systems (essentially cults) with no relationship between their beliefs and physical reality.
I think Augmented Reality, video games, drug legalization, advancements in entertainment technology and guanteed minimum income, will allow the gaps between reality and what people believe to become wider and wider. Effectively infinite.
