To answer your question, know 1st that everything is a huge gamble. At any point in time something might happen causing you to lose all of your money forever. However, this would be my suggested strategy:
If you have $1k, spread it amongst 5 investments. Pick sound coins/tokens with a history of development and obvious non-scamminess. Watch their charts for a few days, on 5-30m intervals (switch around, get a feel for the peaks and valleys). When you think you've got a good grip on the general movements, wait for a relative low and buy in. Set a stop loss (something like 10-20%) so you don't get totally fucked. And also set a goal (10-20%) so you don't get greedy.
You could also try to trade more actively and look for multiple 3-5% gains during a day riding the ups and downs. This is higher risk but obviously if you're making 3 3% trades in a day that's going to be much better than making one 10% trade in a week.
