I've had great experiences at work. When my dad got sick, right before he died, my boss said "go, take as long as you need". When he died, they told me to take as long as I needed before I came back, and donated a pretty big amount to charity in his name (my mom wanted that instead of flowers) I wasn't management, either.

Meh, I work shift work. Everyone shits on shift work but the one great thing about it is that if I don't want to go to work one day I can literally just call up and say "Yeah, I'm not really feeling like I can go to work this day".
I mean, yeah I don't get paid for the shift obviously but the point is that I can do that and no one will care (as long as you don't do it all the time obviously).
