>PhD in physics >self-taught c++ programmer >programming for 6+ years >one large complex tool on github (80,000+ lines) >use Qt Creator with Git (sometimes Visual Studio) >currently writing a renderer using Vulkan API >apply for loads of entry level software jobs >cannot even get an interview >all savings in US tech stocks and crypto (down 40 - 50 %) >sleep in the garage because parents don’t want me embarrassing their normie friends when they come over
Moral of the story: don’t do a STEM degree. Even humanities and social science graduates are able to get jobs because employers have figured out 99.99% people don’t need to know anything beyond grade 6 math. And no, I don’t have autism.
learn javascript or something, ffs it's much easier to get entry-level frontend web job
Asher Martinez
PHD in physics while applying for a codemonkey job might be a problem.
Why don't you try to stay in physics? And if you really want a codemonkey job omit the phd. The general thought process is phd = wants more money = fuck that.
Gabriel Powell
Apply for physics and math related jobs. Could even apply for advanced data science jobs that require proper mathematical understanding, including oil sector, hedge funds, whatever.
Software dev is overcrowded now, as you have experienced.
Sebastian Adams
so what are you waiting for to discover big things in physics with your technical things?
Elijah Gray
>overcrowded but that's not true.
Lucas Hughes
Ok I guess I’ll give a little background about myself. My professor stole my research and published papers and some patents, without including me. After I complained to the dean, they said they would look into it. They didn’t because turns out he was a friend of my professor, so there was a conflict of interest, and my professor was a huge source of grant gibs for their department. Generally speaking professors with life long tenure cannot be touched. Also after this fiasco, no one would provide recommendation letters for me to go do post docs and remain in academia. I started applying for R&D jobs in industry related to physics and math, but still couldn’t get in any where because HR and hiring managers thought me not getting a reference from my professor was “suspicious” and hence a huge “red flag”.
Daniel Campbell
Should have went for a degree in CS if you want a software job. Don't tell me you fell for the /sci/ meme?
Aiden Butler
>got scammed by an autist >not autistic
Liam Hughes
> I was refused a reference by my supervisor in France who thought the male student on my team did all the work.
Just tell he is a sexist and a racist that hate brown and transexual people like yourself.
Brandon Russell
Btw all of these are larps, you aren't told why you failed an interview. It would be a huge liability.
Evan Rodriguez
actually if you ask sometimes they tell you why well just dont give up i guess, make a website, showcase your shit, what's that great project on github about?
if you had the balls to go through a phd and work through all this crap that came your way then i guess learning a bit of javascript or anything that's fashionable now (golang, kotlin, react, angular, c#/.netcore node.js python) shouldn't be too hard, learn the tools too, host something on google cloud platform / amazon aws / ms azure with continuous integration / delivery, make it use design patterns.
work on your looks, eat healthy, dont drink / do drugs, go to the next interview say you want to have a wife and kids and make it look real because your shirt is ironed, and there's your job.
James Rogers
This actually happens quite frequently. Not everyone is like that but those who steal will steal year round. Best choice is to ask previous students how someone acted. Scammed people will generally happily tell you about it. To late for you but might be relevant for other readers here.
Brayden Baker
come work with me on super cool ai trading bots. Its just a hobby at this point and I'm not live trading anything yet, but I'm really excited about some of things that are becoming possible in this space. I work on it on and off unfortunately because I'm a software architect and I'm getting cucked and justed right now in terms of free time
William Hernandez
>mfw I'm a kinda mediocre programmer without any hobby projects who still has no problem getting a high-salary cushy job as implementing simple functions and teaching boomers how to Git All you need is to have your CV say "Masters in Engineering"
KEK. stemcucks get what they deserve. If you'd got a degree in humanities you would have known that one of the side effects of capitalism is "deskilling". Ownership doesn't take skill, and in last five years new wealth and income from owning as opposed to doing broke 50%. Thinking that getting ahead meant being honest and working hard, what a lark. You've totally screwed yourself over by believing the lies you were told since you were a baby, OP. Wake up and stop feeling sorry for yourself. STEMcucks are the new Christcucks.
Brandon Fisher
phd only worth it if you learn how to suck cock for academic ladder climbing and get in the circlejerk for grants (OR if you are actually a genius and solve millenium problems, but that's literally less than 0.01% of phd graduates) academia is to learn how to gently suck off others, it doesn't matter what field you do your doctor of philosophy in
William Gutierrez
if they ask the same things this thread asked, say you liked physics but prefer programming, you learned a lot doing physics and believe the scientific method in general helps solve problems and you think you can apply it to this job,
dont make it sound like you're bitter / angry about whatever happened, dont even mention it, that's for 5 months later when you're having a beer with the trusted colleagues and your trial period is done.
Wyatt Robinson
yep you fucked up. you weren't supposed to ever mention him taking it. it wouldn't have gotten any recognition anyways if it didn't come out under his name, and wouldn't have been jerked by people he jerked off previously
I was highly naive at the time when I first started my PhD. I should have seen the warning signs: >just me in the entire group working on "novel physics research" >previous alumni were unreachable >professor would barely have any meetings with me throughout the year. when he did, always shitted on my work and told me to "step up" or else "i won't get my phd"
since i mainly do contract work I almost never have to show my resume. but the pay is unstable. sometimes i get paid $25k for 3 months of work and then I have literally nothing to do for the rest of the year
i fucked around a bit with trading bots which is why im now down -50% in my portfolio. i should have just fallen for the buy and hold meme and invested in 80% stocks and 20% bonds
Daniel Price
Microsoft (at Redmond, WA) will hire you. Just apply.
Dylan Moore
anywhere,
just apply.
Isaac Rivera
I actually applied to Microsoft earlier this year. But got insta rejected within 12 hours. Am I allowed to make 2 applications in a single year?
If you aren't getting a job with computer science you are possibly a huge cunt, think about how you can improve on interviews and make code that is more impressive.
Gavin Gonzalez
I think it was once every 3 or 6 months. Have to ask my old friends there.
But why would they reject you. You have C++ experience. It matters in which division you have applied. Go for Windows / Azure. They should need C++ developers.
Oracle are hiring basically everyone in their Seattle office.
Google might give you a chance.
For the above two, read a good book on coding interviews first. Cracking the coding interview, 6th edition is good. Look for it at gen.lib.rus.ec.
Liam Hill
>My professor stole my research and published papers and some patents, without including me.
If it were me, I would've probably snap do a Hannibal Lecter on him.
>But why would they reject you. I really don't know. Freelancing could be a red flag to HR drones.
Connor Diaz
come work for Skycoin. Message Synth on Telegram

5 Years PhD, 2 years post-Doc. 7 years without much earning. And above all audacity of tenured advisors/professors on which the whole drama depends. Fuck ! Reality is unless we are already from a well-to-do family (or cash cushion), it's tough to pursue career in an academic line.
As explained in the book Amazon.com: The Design of Business: Why Design Thinking is the Next Competitive Advantage (8601200550054): Roger L. Martin: Books , you need to understand the how knowledge advances from one stage to another — via ‘S curve’ — from mystery (something we can't explain) to heuristic (a rule of thumb that guides us toward solution) to algorithm (a predictable formula for producing an answer) to code (when the formula becomes so predictable it can be fully automated). As knowledge advances across the stages (anecdotally, creative people enjoys it most at “mystery/heuristic” stages), productivity grows and costs drop-creating massive value for companies. This is a classic case of commoditisation and can be seen across many industries.
Software has gone through it without exception. Back in 70s–’85, it was in a mystery/heuristic phase. Now it is at its final stages of commoditisation and terms like “code monkeys” started appearing all over internet. Earlier deep knowledge of OS Internals / Core CS / Multithreading / Scalability was needed throughout, now it has been either automated or contained to industries like FinTech / AI / IoT etc. If you work at a average Web-shop, you are screwed. BTW, did I mention, supply has been sky-rocketed by STEM brain-washing. Other than niche areas like Biotech / NanoTech, Tech has an oversupply problem. Universities and their CS departments have most to gain from this, as very few aspirants in this field would look into a supply-demand equation published by Department of Human Resources or Labour.
---contd----
Jeremiah Hall
---contd--- NOTE: Even you get a job in a web-shop with latest-greatest framework, it's highly probable that you will feel pathetic within those Agile BS, as any creative person should do (pic related)
When an industry is commoditised, its bad for everyone as margin drops and consolidation happens. However Software is not a industry itself - it’s a horizontal, generic one unless you end up working in Tech companies like Microsoft / Google / AutoDesk etc. So effects of commoditisation in a ‘horizontal industry’ should be measured differently and it’s a fact of rejoice for everyone - companies / VCs / hiring managers - except engineers as cost drops in a race to the bottom as everyone undercuts everyone. Again it’s a play of niches. Areas like CyberSecurity is treated very differently than RubyRails (which is highly commoditised).
Here is what you can do
- As someone already mentioned, move to a progressive organisation which practises a Dual-Track-Agile. A typology of organisational cultures. For better results ensure that your manager has first-hand operational-knowledge (ex. software engineering).
- Look into knowledge areas currently passing through ‘mystery/heuristic’ (explorative) phases such as - Product Design and Product-Data-Analysis, if you are looking at options in Tech. I’m tempted to mention Machine Learning here, but unfortunately unless you are a ML Researcher, most of the ML work in corporations revolves mostly around Data Engineering which is not exactly a creative avenue, but certainly necessary.
- You can, of course, look into Scientific Computing areas such as GPU Gems or look into areas where design (qualitative) and tech (quantitative) gets fused to put your creative urges on steroid - Digital Dérive: Reconstructing Urban Environments based on Human Experience. Yeah, all of these are industrial or academic research which you are already aware of.
>all savings in US tech stocks and crypto (down 40 - 50 %) Not so smart now huh
Oliver Thomas
---contd----
- Get a CFA, and apply your creativity to see through numbers and investment strategies formed thereof. This will also build an entry-barrier to your career.
- Get into areas of Tech with high Techno-Functional focus such a SAP / SAS / Oracle-Financials where tech-frameworks-proliferation is mostly absent. You focus on Business/Domain knowledge more that Tech itself.
- And of course, you can move to a different industry such as Nutrition (accredited; )

This is what you get if you're incapable of physical violence.

this was a very interesting read. Thanks for this user.
Brandon Hall
what should a math/physics undergrad work on to become a cfa?
Angel Moore
You must smell bad, have absolutely horrendous social skills, or just be terrible at interviewing. My degree is a step above basket weaving from a mediocre state school. I taught myself programming as an adult (didn’t go to a boot camp) and quickly landed a job making 75k. I’m now making 145k while working remotely in bumblefuck Michigan. I’ve NEVER had a problem getting a programming job. Companies are fucking desperate to hire code monkeys. If you can’t get a job in this market, there is something wrong with YOU.
Brody Lee
as someone who is learning programming and going to be going through a bootcamp this was nice to read
Ryder Thomas
Get someone from inside the company to refer you to HR.
Choose a company you have friends in.
That should help, hopefully.
Carter Davis
I porbably now see it from eployer's perspective. You may sound insightful. But ...PhD *AND* then 2 years of fucking postdoc. It sounds such a dreadful failure at life, I hesitated to even account your opinion.
Connor Rogers
If that's not a larp then all I'm wondering is how is your professor is still alive?
...just saying
Michael Wright
If you make 145k remotely why on Earth do you choose to live in Bumblefuck Michigan??
Nicholas Reed
>Doing a PHD in physics >Not stopping a Msc >Not specializing in nano-structures and fabrication >Not landing a comfy high tech job
>Doing C++ in a garage
JUST
Hudson Walker
> autistic, no social skills, lives with his parents at 30 > PhD in physics > tries to get a job in a field that isn’t physics ... > WHY ARENT THEY RECOGNIZING MY SUPERIOR INTELLECT?!?!?!
Jack Carter
When it comes to code, I'm finding out it's about the ability to build something really useful and actually being able to get it done. Then the second part involves pleasing people and looking like you get the part done. Algorithms have nothing to do with coding (for the most part, although they play a large part in data science) but still you will be asked about them. I see a lot of what they will interview you for, not really being required on the actual job.
Brayden Cooper
First things first bro. Don't shower literally an hour before you drop off resumes. Shower the night before take your baby nap then get up brush your teeth, fix your hair with your hands and put on day old cloths. Not two week old, or fresh. Put on one day old cloths. I fucking swear anywhere you apply at within reason will hire you.
What have ya got to lose. Try it.
Evan Nguyen
I assume family and/or low cost of living. You can live like a goddamn king on 145k when you're not getting assraped with housing costs.
Anthony Sanchez
Apply in Germany, you'll get an entry at 80k€, after tax and social as well as health care you will make around 3300€net / month. If you want to make it good, go for Bosch in Renningen. If you want some more info, reply.
Adrian Morales
hey OP I am doing a project and need cheap programmers interested to join?
Asher Cook
So, we're supposed to believe you got a Ph.D in physics, and can't find work...as a programmer, which is unrelated.
The only part I believe is:
>>self-taught c++ programmer
And you can't get interviews, because your code sucks.
Brayden Sullivan
Post youre github, OP Pls
Tyler Watson
Bump. Post your github , Op I wann learn c++ as well
Zachary Ramirez
Because it’s cheap as fuck and my living expenses are paid for by my tenants. I get to invest nearly all of my salary.
William Allen
You should apply to work overseas, and ask for an expat/relocation package. The land of the burger doesn't seem to be promising firendo. Try Indonesia or Singapore.
Connor Richardson
trade the forex market, im sure you have sufficient iq to be successful. I even have 6 beefy computers running 24/5 running scripts. Unironically most forex scripts use a programing language called mql4 which is based on c++ so you will feel more at home, but i use python instead
Cooper Jenkins
Can you explain in more detail user?
Liam Turner
>code sucks That's why he is looking for an entry level job user
Hudson Campbell
what is the reasoning behind that?
Mason Gutierrez
I know the game development industry is fucked but surely that is better than being unemployed?
You certainly should not be applying for entry level roles.
>Get a job at a startup This. I have worked in 2 startups and they have MASSIVE boners for physics PhDs.
Jose Thomas
How can't you find a job? How many jobs did you apply for? I have a PhD in applied math (which a small amount of programming in Python, but not much). I did a few Coursera courses on data science which took a little over a month, and spent like 3 weeks learning the basics of C++. I don't have a github. I got a job as a C++ software engineer (also involves some machine learning). I also got two other job offers in data science. I applied for around 200 jobs all over the EU.
Daniel Turner
Get into deep learning. $800k total comp start
Joshua Fisher
What is wrong you faggots?
I dont even have a bachelors degree, couldnt be arsed with taking the Math exams. Self-learned from Jow Forums as teenager, started with Gentoo at 16.
Jobs in computier science, IoT, Enterprise, Cloud, literally raining over me, literally was easier to take a starting job as Java-developer paying >100k than to finish math. I hadnt even applied for that job, their recruiter, a MILF, chatted me up in the library coffeehouse. This was in 2010.
conclusion > you are autistic
Julian Gomez
just fucking learn PLC programming OP, industrial companies will always need them, plus the pay is good and job very easy and interesting, because you work with machines, but write simple logic.
Jackson Walker
Not that user, but what are the options to work remotely? I'm from europe, but don't want to relocate.
>everybody and his grandma is hiring programmers >cant even get an entry level job
damn
Jordan James
>internet explorer what the fuck
Robert Mitchell
What language did you learn?
Brody Hall
user, you have to kill your professor. he ruined your life. you need to get revenge.
Luis Garcia
>not raw dawwging 4channel like some cheap sissy trap escort who has a completely destroyed and leaking asshole Do you even know what being livin bean means
People stealing your work is rampant in academia and always has been and always will be. Half the time they don't even know they are doing it, just you had a conversation with them about a solution you've found and they're working on a similar project.
Anthony Reyes
he never was user. you would have to be an idiot to lose in this market with so much tech ability. this faggot doesnt know any math or programing. or that 50% would be at least a positive. theres fucking 10x opportunities every week. with math and code you ALWAYS see ALL the moons. this faggot never gets any. or thought he would buy and hold like a stacys grandmother or something. SERIOUSLY who TF buys and holds with c++ and advanced math skills? an fucking idiotic faggot you needs to kys
Aiden Jenkins
Your qualifications are all over the place and you have no working experience in the field, of course you're struggling to get the interviews.
