Basically done this working at an international large company for the past 5 months, already on good terms with most of the mid-upper management, and new job title responsible for handling a budget of a few million. Did the same at my old job, went from blue collar to leader board, reporting to the ceo, in a couple of years. (Which gave me a heads up to how badly the ship was sinking, so I got said new lower position job at different company, with better wage and terms before it imploded)

So sure, it works. In a sense that if people trust you to get the job done no matter what, you will be noticed. But that also means that they expect you to do everything thrown at you no matter what, as time usage is no longer an issue.

I’d rather be good at delegating tasks to others, and managing my own time. Just not cut out for it, so I do what I’m good at, work to finish the tasks.

This is survivorship bias and I really wish people like Elon kept their mouths shut because spouting those platitudes in the sort of prescriptive way people like him do that is absolutely pointless. Tons of people work their fucking ass off and sacrifice everything and they end up with nothing. They don't have dad's that own emerald mines. Tons of people work moderately less hard and end up as multi-millionaires. The truth is that we don't know how our reality operates and we call it luck, God, probability, whatever, but we don't know. What we do know is that it isn't fair and we do know that our brains can't deal with that so it seeks some justification for why things happen and why things are in fact fair. People don't want to acknowledge it, but some people just seem to have more "luck" than others and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. The stories like Meryl Streep saying "oh I'm too ugly for Hollywood am I?" and she goes on to be as successful as she was. She is the minority. Out of 1,000 people (or more quite frankly) 'too ugly for Hollywood,' maybe 1 ends up in her situation. Tim Ferriss does this same shit. In fact the whole motivational "performance science" field is based on the bullshit that because a lot of people who succeeded meditated for example, meditation must be some magical enhancement to your life that makes you succeed. It's all bullshit. Life is a largely random. Go to the gym every day, get cancer and die at 35. Smoke cigarettes every day, live to 90. It's all nonsense and outside of your control and yet humans think they can tip a few marbles here and there to tip the scales of the universe. Not how it works.

I grew up poor. like living on the streets to 200sqft apartment. my mother worked her ass off at Churches Chicken to provide for us. I graduated high school and well i made something out of myself thru hard work. Some people just need to work harder and sacrifice more than others.

Now I am worth over 2.2 million and can relax and just have fun with my family. I was born in 1984 so i wasnt lucky like all the boomers.

When a guy like Elon Musk talks about WORK, he is not talking about the mind-numbing type of work that some wageslave at an Amazon warehouse does just to keep living from paycheck to paycheck until he decides to hang himself because of how miserable he feels doing that job.

He is talking about working relentlessly towards being the best at whatever it is that you want to become. He is talking about being passionate and caring about what you do.

I'm not saying that you should always follow your "passion" either because, most of the time, that passion is not something you can make money out of easily. The reality is that some things yield more profit than others at a given time and place.

However, whatever it is that you decide to dedicate your life to, working relentlessly at it and actually caring about your work can only increase your chances of making it.

None of you will make it.

I get this isn’t exactly his point, but with the exception of hourly wage earners who literally put in 80+ verifiable hours on the clock in a single week, people who claim to work that much are always completely full of shit. I’ve literally done it a few times and it’s a pretty terrible idea that destroys your ability to function and exponentially increases the likelihood of career-ending fuckup.

Elon doesn't actually work that hard though. You need to pay attention to what rich people do, not what they say.

I didn't even get the weekend off, it was 12 hour work days 7 days a week.

Not all that don't burn out make it. Some just die bitter and stressed out. Perseverance guarantees success only in so much as continuing to try mathematically predicts a fruitful outcome but that's only mathematically.

Practically there's a limited window of peak performance. And that performance diminishes over time and eventually ends when you die. There's no real practical guarantee that perseverance means you will succeed.

This, not only is it a dumb fake quote but the math doesn't make much logical sense
