Admission cutoff, throttle and braking. Throttle is a valve like one on a barbecue’s propane tank, regulating the flow of steam. Cutoff lever reduces or increases the throw (back and forth motion) of the piston valve. By doing this you can change the point where the steam supply is cut off in the cylinder each stroke, meaning it expands behind the piston and exhausts at a lower pressure, so you get less power but higher efficiency as cutoff % goes down. You can also reverse the engine by moving the cutoff lever past its midway point. Pretty genius design imo, especially for the late 1800’s when they had no computers.
