Why should someone join a half ass club like the Free Masons when they could join a full ass drinking club/lodge deal, like the Elks club or something. On the other side of things you could join a no ass club like Rotary if you wanted to do a charity thing. Straddling the middle seems like you'd be ineffective at both.

Masons among themselves don't really argue, but grand lodges do argue. For example, some lodges stop recognizing others (the grand lodge of georgia was just listed as irregular for trying to say homosexuals cant become masons). Unrecognized / irregular lodges means that all lodges beneath them are no longer recognized masons. i.e. all Georgia masons are now not Masons anymore according to several grand lodges. So if you grand lodge no longer recognizes georgia for instance, you cannot go to their lodges and they cannot go to yours. It's sort of self regulating that way, and the united grand lodge of england is the overall governing entity that either recognizes or doesnt recognize your grand lodge.

They do ask if you have Masonic lineage but I got in without any. It's really just one thing they consider in your application. More important are your character references and that two masons sign your petition.
