Initially, when I started out I was young and I had a dream that I would change the world by working at a Fortune 500 company. I slowly realized that I was just a cog in a machine. It's just the monotony, the work never ends. You finish one sprint, and the next one begins. You have that damned daily standup where the manager and your team breathes down your neck. It's like, it just never ends. Also it starts getting petty with a pecking order. The senior folks and the important people have the desks near the windows. If you're new or junior to the team, you get a desk near the center of the office floor. Office bullying, again, it's so much the work itself that is a pain, but dealing with your coworkers and having to spend at least 40+ hours a week with them. That's why this picture is so terrifying to many of us, because it perfectly encapsulates the terror we have to face each day. The facade of diversity, yet everybody is pressured to go through the same exact NPC script.

During my time off, I actually missed being part of the commute, etc. I remember I would get up around noon every day thinking everybody else is at work. I felt like a bum just staying home doing nothing with my life. Not making money. Honestly, I think I was in a depression because deep down I really didn't care. Maybe I would get a job at a grocery store stocking shelves, but somehow I ended up landing a decent white-collar job (again) but I had to relocate.
My commute currently is very long, we're talking north end of an hour to 90 minutes, but I'm still thankful. At the same time, I can feel my old feels resurfacing again. So I understand why all these young kids just starting out of college are thinking and feeling this way, I understand their feels and what they're going through. Sometimes, I think a lot of these young grads are going through a quarter-life crisis since they literally spent their entire lives up to that point in the system and now they're truly on their own.
Unironically, I would blame Zuckerberg. I still remember when Silicon Valley mostly had cubicles, but then all these "Agile"-types started to tout open office workspace. So corporate got wind of this and decided to cram everybody into as little space as possible to save on OpEx. It's truly insufferable.
