Hello AMB Community,
Having had several intense discussions with the technical team, I regret to announce that AMB-NET deployment will be delayed by 7-8 weeks. More specific timelines will be announced in early January.
Why did this happen?
1. We have performed penetration testing and ran 2 out of 3 security audits. We have found potential vulnerabilities and exploits that could threaten the integrity of AMB-NET. As a result of those tests, our technical team had to go back to the architecture to revise the code and close the holes.
2. Importantly, with the second audit of three having exposed vulnerabilities, it did not make sense to proceed to audit 3. In particular, our technical team needs to spend more time on Hermes nodes, which were designed and built from scratch by Ambrosus. As Hermes nodes are the key element that connects IoT devices to our Proof of Authority blockchain and enables recording of bundles on chain, their proper functioning is integral to the success of AMB-NET. (We intend to carry out security audits/QA on: 1) Blockchain and Smart Contracts (incl. Bridge and Masternodes); 2) Hermes and IoT Gateways; 3) Interoperability of the two)
3. Given that we were about to onboard external stakeholders to run their masternodes, but key infrastructure of AMB-NET was not secure to what we believe is an adequate level, we prefer to avoid even the smallest possibility of critical failure of the network and in particular any accidental losses of AMB for masternode operators. Performing revision of code and changes may require change of code in AMB-NET, which could be risky with external nodes onboarded on the network. While all validator nodes are run by Ambrosus, we have the luxury of resetting the network to fix problems. Once the nodes will be deployed externally, resetting the network would not be possible. This is why we are keeping current wave 0 running their nodes on the test-net, whereas we are running live simulations and stress testing on the main-net. While the team is unhappy about this delay, we feel it’s a lesser evil than launching publicly and onboard the community with possible risks of failure.
What are the next steps?
A) Technical team revises the code, based on the issues flagged by QA / security audits.
B) Repeated Security Audits are performed.
C) If all security audits indicate full safety, Wave 0 will be onboarded on main-net.
D) If only blockchain security audits indicate full safety, we may consider onboarding Apollos and Atlas nodes, without launching Hermes nodes. In that scenario until Hermes nodes are launched (Hermes are the nodes generating bundles), there may be additional temporary smart contracts deployed that would redistribute block rewards to Atlas nodes in lieu of the missing heartbeat bundles. Hermes nodes would be properly activated within 1-2 months after onboarding of these nodes.
E) Associated product releases (Wallet, Bridge, Explorer, Dashboard) are all dependent on the successful deployment of main-net with external nodes. As such, some of these products are likely to be released on test-net in January (in particular, explorer and dashboard), while the other two would be released jointly with onboarding of external masternodes on main-net, which would require both the bridge and wallet to function.
What are the tentative key dates to look forward to?
i) 2nd week January: Repeated Security Audits for Blockchain and Smart Contracts. IF Blockchain/Smart Contract security audits discover any additional security risks (very low chance), then 2-4 weeks should be added to the time-lines below. We do not, however, expect the blockchain / smart contract audits to reveal any new risks/vulnerabilities.
ii) 3rd week January: Dashboard for Main-Net open to external organisations
iii) 4th week January: Explorer for Test-Net
iv) 5th Week January: Announce Wave 1. Criterion for Wave 1 selection: the longest uninterrupted storage of AMB in a given wallet that will be used to run masternodes (or connect to the bridge). The longer someone has held AMB in their wallet, the sooner they will be onboarded for masternodes.
v) IF Hermes security audits show red flags: 3rd week February, onboard Wave 0 Atlas and Apollo to Main-Net. Launch Bridge and Explorer. (Hermes Offline)
vi) IF Hermes security audits show no red flags: 4th week February, onboard Wave 0 Atlas and Apollo to Main-Net. Launch Bridge, Explorer and Dashboard (Hermes Online)
vii) 2nd / 3rd Week March: Onboard Wave 1 to main-net.
viii) 4th / 5th Week March: Announce Wave 2 Atlas operators. Announce Auction for Apollo operators.
ix) March/April: Native AMB Wallet. (until the native wallet is released, third party wallets and console would likely be the main options for transferring AMB)
