Basically, something is going to give in an economy during rate hikes, it just depends what is most vulnerable and what will go first.

the idea is correct. wall street treated the mortgage market like a high-stakes casino because they knew they would make money in the short-term and would face very little repercussions down the road. there were educated groups of fund managers and analysts (steve carell, christian bale, etc.) who caught on quick enough to bet against the wall street gamblers

pretty much. they didn't really cover how these banks realized how badly they fucked up and tried to insure themselves against the collapse by short selling the very cdos they were still actively hawking to their clients
the insurer they used was AIG. because AIG was stupid and greedy and thought the housing market would go up forever.
obama bailed out AIG to the tune of $182 billion because if they collapsed instead all these big banks wouldn't get paid out on their collapse insurance
