I'm actually surprised there aren't more Rothschild tier families. I mean, the original guy got started in the 1700's and according to the chart above, the family is worth about 2 trillion dollars today. But imagine you had $10,000 or pounds or whatever in 1750. Then you just invested it in a diversified portfolio that grew with the world economy until now. Or you got fancy with it and only put it in high growth industries and you and your descendants got lucky a few times. I could see over the course of 250 years of good stewardage, a sum like that growing to $2 trillion. And just the law of large numbers would on the back of a napkin indicate that somebody somewhere would have the wherewithal to do it. Wasn't thinking about stocks per se but note the humble beginnings of the NYSE were in 1792 so imagine having an index fund from the first day with $10,000 in it and just rebalancing as needed. I always looked at it like imagine you're a day trader and you get your stack to something huge (for a day trader) like 10 or 20 million. Well then you start having liquidity issues. Like you can't just sink 5 mill in a day trade so your growth rate inflects hard. If you want to keep making money you have to branch out so swing trading, fundamental analysis etc.
At some point if you're extremely lucky, even that shit doesn't really give you much of a return beyond overall market growth so you go into real estate, businesses, blah blah blah.
Now imagine you get to the point where you wear that out. You have trillions of dollars. At this point, there's nothing left to buy that can grow beyond the speed of the world economy. So you buy "priceless" treasures and sit on them. This is why the Rothschild's have so much art and shit.
