Well yeah, it sounds like a lot, i know. Every month some random $1000 to $1500 expense comes up. Last month i had to fix my car, this month my washer/dryer unit blew, and thats $1300 to get a new one. Every month i have to repay 200 dollars to my 401k for a loan i took out for a mortgage. There property is reasonable there, his house is great, like 3000 SF on about 3 acres and only like 420k. He sleeps on the the train on the way to work.

$90k doesn't sound right at all. Maybe in the DC area where everyone is GS13+ and gets DC locality. I live in seattle and I'm a GS11 Step 1 and I make $65k. My job series plateaus around G12 Step 4 which is just barely $90k, and the only people who would make more than me at that point would be supervisors and directors. And the vast majority of people in my office max out at lower grades than 11, their top salary even after 20+ years would only be maybe $60k tops.

Basically I'm calling bullshit, that number either only applies to DC which is a bubble of top-tier federal workers, or it's using gay math to add in the value of our 'benefits' to our salary (like being shuttered without notice for an indefinite period of time according to the whims of the god-emperor... great benefit, that)

It was a 10k loan to myself i took out of my 401k account. Total in my 401k savings is roughly about 125k.

I repay 5% interest to myself on a 5 year loan, about 200 dollars a month. Not my first choice to do, but i needed cash badly to make a down payment, closing costs, plus extra money left over to prove to my lender that i wouldnt miss mortgage payments. That last part was for a better interest rate.
