MW protocol is interesting and nice, but isn't as private and strong as CryptoNote. Problem with Monero is that the PoW algo, CryptoNight (and variants) is very complex, and isn't a good choice for the long term, specially with FPGA mining coming now. Also, that complex PoW algo is the main reason why it takes so much time to sync the entire chain, because it's too heavy for the CPU to validate each one of the blocks. On the other side, the PoW algo Grin uses, Cuckaroo, is a very fine choice because it's more simple and efficient than CryptoNight and its variants. I would say the best choice could be Monero adopting Cuckaroo as the PoW algo. There's already a CryptoNote fork with zero premine and 15s block time aiming to do this in the next month.
