Will UBI happen in our lifetime?
Will UBI happen in our lifetime?

no. to borrow a modern aphorism from redditors, "nothing ever happens"
it will after link singularity happens and alot of people lose their jobs since its replaced by a smart contract, and then these people will protest and burn things until the government comes out and introduces a UBI but ONLY if you go and get a implant chip in your right hand, selling your soul to the devil and accepting the mark of the beast in the process, all for receiving free money and some other cool things like having all your information stored on that chip. Also having your hand cut off by thugs that will steal your chip will be "part and parcel" of living in a post modern day utopia. So you can by pass this and become part of the future elite by buying some link.
Yep.
And when voting by the internet is introduced in the US, NEETs are gonna make it a reality.
1/3 of millenials live at home.
Plenty of boomers did not plan to leave inheritances.
NEETs are gonna need a safety net when their moms start dying off.
No, we will either have increased social services, broader subsidies for the low end of the populace that qualifies, or more negative income tax rates.
If you UBI ever comes about it will only be a boom to "poor people" industries like Nike and Apple. i.e highest single category of groceries that American food stamps are spent on is cola.
UBI will essentially just raise the 0 point of what monetary income would mean. This might be a good way of pricing out noncitizens who don't qualify for the income, but won't increase quality of life generally.
UBI is the last rally cry of the neo-liberals to convince the working class that capitalism might actually work.
UBI + embracing automation is the best hope for humanity, but for it to work we need to collectively work past our addiction to private ownership & wealth.
So, I don't think it'll happen for centuries -- it probably won't happen at all, our rate of consumption will likely destroy us first. Shortsided little ant people go to work all week so they can flex on other ants with their watch or some shit. It's pathetic and we all ought to feel ashamed.
Probably but the problem with that is simple. Eventually pretty much everything will be automated and wealth will be permanently centralized. No going up unless you happen to be funny or some other social trait. You family will be able to be bought and sold by the new nobility and we will return to fiefdom.
>He thinks disadvantaged noncitizens won't be the first to go on the dole.
What are you, some kind of racist?
I don't know if it will happen but if it isn't completely unconditional and universal, basic income will make the world worse. Welfare traps already exist that force people to stay on welfare because any job they can land will actually lower their income and make them lose vital services like healthcare. Conditional welfare also creates bureaucratic bloat that is designed to be inefficient and victimize the poor.
Even Donald Trump gets a check, if basic income is a right it must be opt out and treated like one. Doing this would decouple the puritan reverence for largely pointless labour from the need to survive and slowly combat the rise of neo-feudal managerialism. It would also decrease state power by removing the red tape currently intertwined with welfare programs.
Again, conditional basic income will make the world even worse than it already is. Conditional = more bureaucracy and oppression. Unconditional = liberty and efficiency. The book has way more to it than this, but read Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber if you're interested user.
>increased social services
If all the basic needs are covered, minimum wage can be lowered, prices of items can go down, company profits can go down because everything is cheaper now. Let's make this happen.
so fucking based
There is no reason to keep unproductive people alive
There's no reason to keep anybody alive.
We're a net detriment to the planet and there are more unhappy people than happy people.
No too many darkies in society. Where is this money going to come from.
>If all the basic needs are covered, minimum wage can be lowered
If all the basic needs are covered, nobody needs to work at minimum wage. You'll have to pay what their time is worth to them, not what it's worth to you.
If people aren't forced to work for their basic needs, all the bullshit jobs will disappear because nobody can afford to pay enough for people to work them.
no, get a fucking job you lazy cunt
there is no reason to be alive
Nature has evolved us for a purpose. Have you found yours yet?
Probably and then 4 years later America will look like Russia in the 90's.
you create goods & services for the ruling class
once a robot can do that better than you, theyll simply get rid of the unproductive.
It is a certain eventuality
Either it eventually happens and life goes to shit or poorfags who lost their job to Johnny 5 will burn things and life will go to shit.
Shits fucked yo.
saving rate of 50%+ and you will achieve it in the next 30 years. Also if you keep a (mostly) healthy lifestyle and live in a first world country 100+ years is no miracle.
Basically, this is my goal. I just want to live as long as possible and witness the 22nd century as a privateer
Maybe, but only after lots of mass death and civil unrest. And then the UBI will be given to the survivors the same way the NHS was given to the survivors of WWII, and then the system will need to be funded at the end, and then the cycle completes again.
Then where is all of the UBI money going to come from if nobody is working?
>All animals are equal
Original draft
>Some animals are more equal than others
First Amendment
"Nature" didn't "evolve" anything, you goddamn retard. Go back to school and actually pay attention this time.
Keep that in mind when you also are replaced by a cheaper, more efficient, and more reliable machine.
Ive had this argument before here. They said 'from the tax on the producers of the products'...the robot owners.
So the proposal is that someone owns a robo factory, making widgets, they pay tax to the government on the profits from widget sales, that tax goes to people as UBI, they then buy widgets with their UBI money (the same money that was taken as tax on the profit from the widget sale).
Kek. Its the socialism version of perpetual energy
I hope so, but I doubt it.

Very likely to happen in Europe when the debt crisis re-emerges. ECB has already been keeping rates at 0 so I see no solution how to stimulate economy other than helicopter money.
>when voting by the internet is introduced in the US
That will never happen. The system is designed to discourage voters.
You might get money for nothing, but not chicks for free. The chicks will continue aiming for the top x%, which means most people with regular basic income will not be prioritized.
>If people aren't forced to work for their basic needs, all the bullshit jobs will disappear because nobody can afford to pay enough for people to work them.
Highly doubtful, most likely people will work under the table
No, because it assumes that companies will accept that they will be taxed heavily or nationalized as they automate their processes for profit; i.e., that they'll just share this profit in order to let you sit on your ass for no reason (other than coercion). It's the same old leftist delusion as always.
man, regular show sure got surreal near the end.
>Resources being depleted
>wealth pooling among the wealthy
>'average' anything is getting eroded
>9 Billion people on Earth by 2030
>mostly poor uneducated and uncivilized people
>food is only going to fatties
>people are living longer
>environment is fucked and getting worse
>automation is happening and compounding
>despite being cheaper to make than ever before, goods are getting more expensive
Honestly not sure if I want to go full psycho and become one of the pseudo-elite before it crumbles, or be part of the solution that will probably mean people have a 'lower' quality of life or are eradicated...
UBI is beyond madness for me.
It will NEVER work.
1) People with ubi will keep working doing illegal "unregistered" work
2) No fucking worker ever will not riot when he knows that a big chunk of his salary goes into taxes to pay UBI
Maybe but the amount will be so small that no one will want to live on it. The picture in the op is stupid and clearly not how the real world actually works.
>People with ubi will keep working
Please read the first couple of sentences on the wikipedia article about what UBI is about. You clearly have no clue.
UBI only works with correctly implemented population control, which we need anyway to stave of environmental collapse. I don't give a shit personally, but most people hold their ability to shit out crotch-fruit and do a shit job raising them as more important than that.
Seems like a good idea, but it would raises taxes, increase rent and home ownership, and globally decrease wages.
People will still have to work because the UBI would be enough to eat and pay a small rent, but nothing more.
Could work in high life standard countries like Denmark or Finland, but not third world countries. With UBI, migrants would have even more incentive to come live in the west.
We need an other mode of production than capitalism.
Buy gold/guns
Hide dat shit
Laugh when USD implodes and you get to mad max
Depends on how old you are and what country you're in.
USA will probably be among the last country to implement it on a large scale. US is slow as fuck to abandon religion so they will be stuck in "muh capitualism and werk hard for the amherican dream" mindset for a long time.
this, sadly
I really don’t see how capitalism will surivive this century. AI will put most people out of a job and wealth concentration will ensure all the productive assets remain in the hand of the elite. At that point you either have to have UBI or a civil war.
If there's capital and it's in the hand of a few, then that IS capitalism.
UBI will come, to our deteiment, as it's just pocket money for eternity and the degenerating upper class will vegetate in the reigning position.
Currencyless socialism (not Marxism geared at stateless communism), civic direct demicracy (excluding civilians) and a violent solution to the overpopulatiob problem might be the only way out.
I.e. Star Trek
This. Dead-weight will be exterminated either directly or indirectly. The idea that people are just going to be kept around like a human zoo is asinine.
wouldn't working here be a better option?
e.g
work for £500
keep 50% so £250 just for you
the over half goes to the other thousand or more people who want free shit
250/1000 = £0.25 per person
seems like you get a lot richer faster instead of just waiting around
I hope it does, looking forward to fully embracing my autism and becoming a steam train driver.
What over population problem? Even worldwide, global pop peaks at 7 billion in 2050 and then declines. Fertility rates haven been falling everywhere for decades. Yeah it’s too late for Europe/US, but even Chinese and Middle East fertility is crashing.
We should all kill ourselves.
I never understood the overpopulation thing. Look at a satellite image of the Earth, there's so many places that are empty. And we've barely even begun to build upwards, I see 1 floor or 3 floor apartments everywhere. Meanwhile genetical engineering is making us able to grow more food on less space and soon enough we'll even be able to make cost efficient lab grown meat that tastes exactly the same as the real deal.
>Look at a satellite image of the Earth
*at night. dark spots = unused land or has 1 sand hut per million square meters. sure, some of it are farms or protected woods or something but it's still area that can be better used (skyscrapers with farms on top, if actual farms will even be necessary by then). could probably even make farm lands on the side of buildings with spider farm bots that harvest and maintain what grows
We should just do welfare in exchange for sterilization. If you cant be self suficient you should be removed from the gene pool. That is the solution that most approximates how nature works. Non functional people are much like non functional cells in the body, they must be discarded, if they dont and accumulate, we call that cancer. 95% of government spending is wasted on old people, unproductive minorities, the military state and women. The only humanity-advancing benefits we get are tangental gains from military research. No change is going to happen though, no UBI, no sterilization for welfare, just a slow slide into an orwellian nightmare thanks to an ever expanding bureaucratic government that resists change.
