I had this concern also. The solution is that innovations in hard drives will allow more storage. This can be predicted with Moore's law. It is not uncommon now for data centers to have petabytes or exabytes of storage. I think that 500-1000 data centers hosting mining nodes is probably decentralized enough. You can mine without having your own node, you just join a pool. I think we may eventually only have 2 mining pools competing against each other. Blockchains span so many fields of thought, Computer science, electrical engineering, economics, political science, business, and finance to name a few. I think unlimited blocks are the way to go.

It's not about storage you dumb-fucks. It has ALWAYS been about upload/download speeds. Nodes have to be able to reliably upload and download blocks within a ten minute window. the bigger the blocks, the fewer nodes can do this. And this factor is predominantly determined by ISP's and location.

ok then have high speed fiber lines between the mining nodes. The fiber technology exists. There is a TAT-14 transatlantic cable in use right now and it's speed is 3.2 TERABYTES per second. I don't see this as an obstacle. I think between 500 and 1000 nodes is probably distributed enough.
