What we're seeing right now is what we saw in 2017-2018 with Ethereum. Bunch of chainlink copycats coming in, announcing their projects and how superior they are to all the other solutions. Problem is, just like with Ethereum, chainlink is so far ahead and has so many partners and huge community that even if these projects are legitimately 100x better, chainlink will still win. We're gonna see the cardano to chainlink, the EOS to chainlink, and how they will all promise to be better and do it faster, but in the end they will all utterly fail.

This is a good question that deserves a deep look and below are some of our highlights:

The end goal is kinda similar, to resolve the blockchain oracle problem, but the way of achieving this is quite different, leading to a lot of differences for both oracle users and node runners.

For users, the solution is more scalable with lower cost as DOS is achieving consensus among oracle nodes off-chain via verifiable random function and threshold cryptography, there’s one transaction sending back on-chain. While chainlink is performing on-chain consensus with multiple nodes sending transactions back, this won’t scale well and cost a lot of gas and longer delay.

The thing is in 2017-2018, ethereum was already widely known and ranked #2 on cmc, chainlink is still relatively unknown and doesn't have the developer fanbase that eth had.

For node operators, as chainlink is resorting to SGX, which DOS won’t adopt - there’re some reasons for that: i) SGX is susceptible to security vulnerabilities like Foreshadow and Spectre which could leak private info and hijack programs inside SGX enclave. ii) Using SGX means the trust is solely leveraged to Intel. Also, SGX is not equipped with every CPU; even with SGX-equipped CPU, it's disabled by default, it has to be manually turned on in BIOS settings - this is a great entry barrier and/or extra cost for many node runners especially many of them are expected to be running on VPS / cloud servers like digital ocean, vultr, aws, google cloud, etc.
Beyond that, there might be not that many oracle requests in the beginning, so to bootstrap network and keep more node operators, 35% of tokens are reserved for “mining” incentive - that is to say, token economy is also different but important for node runners to consider.

Other thing worth mentioning is the use of randomness in the system instead of reputation in making nodes selection - it keeps the system more decentralized, secure and fair - as reputation leads to targeted attacks and the Matthew Effect (centralization), disincentivizing new node operators with same abilities to join the network. In DOS each oracle request is randomly dispatched to a group of nodes; as a comparison, chainlink node is manually configured by node runners to support a subset of APIs/tasks - you see the difference

It was 2nd because it was the first innovative thing since bitcoin, so it very quickly rose to the top. After ethereum so many project, both legitimate and scams are announcing how revolutionary they are and what they can do, so for the average normie now it's impossible to tell a difference between chainlink and say Dentacoin. It all looks the same to them. And as far as popularity goes, the fact that chainlink is so popular here is a good sign. After all this board had the same obsession with ethereum back in 2016 and even before that on Jow Forums with bitcoin in 2011. Even then I'd say that rank 33 on CMC is pretty impressive.

This is actually the biggest reason I have so much faith in chainlink. Along with the partnership with zeppelin_os (which makes chainlink the defacto oracle service for ethereum) as well as the town crier acquisition.

If you look at the projects that stand between ETH and LINK on the top 100, most of them are fucking ETH clones though. There honestly isn't much in the list that isn't just either "bitcoin but better" or "ethereum but better". LINK is actually something new entirely, it just looks like another random coin because the list is so flooded with copycat dogshit.

This is actually great for us because it gives LINK cover. More time for us to accumulate before people realize it's not just another copycat shittoken and it starts to go parabolic.
