Friend of mine had his sights set on this his whole life, did cadets, had to join hot shots for a bit and then slipped into a very competitive location at about 23. He's definitely fucked up from some of the traumatic things he's seen but otherwise it seems like an exciting life. He works a shit ton of overtime and claims he makes six figures, I believe that is before tax though. I don't think the current generation will get the same kind of pensions that previous public servants have received, but I have a feeling many of them will claim disability later in life, whether they actually need it or not. Overall seems pretty based if that's your thing. Beats being a regular wagecuck as long as you don't get maimed. Also I imagine it is less likely to be automated compared to some other professions that are about to get decimated.

Decently competitive, but worth it. I'm in pretty decent shape but no world class athlete. I'm in a medium sized suburb in northwest Indiana.
Theres an easy written test that any of us here could ace.
The physical test was very challenging but just workout and suck it up.
The psychological exam was retarded and relatively easy.
Just tested a few places for the hell of it and got hired within a year and a half. Very much worth it and doable. Most municipalities will pay you to attend training also

anyone looking into this should also check out the fact that fires are less and less common due to changes in building materials. I doubt the public is going to keep supporting firefighters if all they do is get cats out of trees

Danger is fun dude. Theres no rush like going into a fire, and pulling someone out. You train to do the proper things so the anxiety dies down with time. I used to be very anxious when I started and yeah I've seen some fucked up things but I'd rather trade off some of my wellbeing rather than slave at a fucking corporate shithole factory or office for life.

People are stupid and the fire fighter union will just tell them that if they make cuts they will all die in fires and have no ambulance to save them and people will give them what they want. It happens every time cuts to police or fire are discussed.

Passed on the Chicago Fire Dept Test but my one friends took it and got number 2xx out of like 20k in the random lotto and was in the second class for that hiring process. Him and everyone I know in that line of work all love it.

Once you're hired, you are good to go. They put you through academy (5 months) and EMT training (few weeks to few months) and you're good to go

they also rescue people from drowning and shit, general crisis and need to be at an EMT level of medic where I live. not getting automated anytime soon..

Yea I have my house up for sale right now and will likely move out of state when it sells. I'm sort of playing it by ear as to my destination but the property taxes are just out of control here and I can't take it anymore. My dept. doesn't have a residency requirement and a bunch of my guys have been telling me to jump ship ASAP so Indiana will likely be the move. Looking forward to it tbqh

You can't count work days.. you must count hours. Firefighters are not doing 8 hour days, so during the year you work as much in hours as any wage cuck.

You get used to working long hours though, it's really not that bad. My crew flat out refuses to work less than 10 hours a day, is pissed off if it's less than 12. The ideal is 16 hours because if you work more than that you have to take hours away from the next day to respect the gay ass "2:1" rule where you have one hour of sleep for every two hours you worked. If we can get 14 days of 16 hours each, the overtime is soooooo much more money.
