Is it worth it to change careers and learn a trade at 33 years old?

Is it worth it to change careers and learn a trade at 33 years old?

background:
wasted 1st quarter of my life on music... but technically inclined, doing some labour jobs too.

Quit music alltogether - learned to code at 29.

At 33yrs have developed circulation problems and hate my life sitting in front of a computer screen all day...

I've got lots of family working within a very large company who manufactures logging equipment. They tell me to get an engineering degree or learn a trade. I'll be 38 years old by the time i finish schooling...

This sounds dumb to me. but i dont make great decisions, like ask Jow Forums for advice.... what do?

Attached: 87-year-old-granddad-is-the-olde.jpg (1920x1080, 159K)

Even if you are 38 when you finish schooling, you've still got another 30 years or so of work ahead of you.

Go for it dude.

Im facing the same issue, OP, Im 27, a lawyer and hate every second of it, thinking about going back to school to get an engineering degree. I just miss logical reasoning, I hate distorting the truth and law to say what I need it to say.

If you enjoy coding then fix your health issues and become better and better at coding and you're already set. What the fuck does your family know about that sector? Coding is a trade..

Chances that you hate all facets of being a lawyer is pretty slow so I'd recommend getting something which has good synergy with your current education.

There are MANY combinations you can make with a law degree that will earn you a lot of money.

this is the worst part. im already set and i cant bear to do it another day. i am fit, and train everyday at the gym. coding is a shit life. it would be reasonable for me to apply it to the next job, like program machines or robots, where i could physically go to a job site and service them.

with current pace you need to get new trade every 7 years just to keep on upflow

lots of lawyers went to my code school

Its not too late fren. When i was a zoomer 10 years ago i went to school with a 36 y/o based boomer. He was like a chad grandpa

>Coding is a trade
Trades involve licensing, bonding, insurance...
Any stupid twat can write shitty code.

I took a four month cnc class when I was 32. I make about $1000/wk now with overtime. It was a pretty great idea imo

I was thinking of going into coding myself. But by what youre saying, it doesnt seem worth it at all.

Similar situation my dude, I never graduated university and ended up working in sales and consulting.

Thinking of saying fuck it and going to work for the railroads.

Don't want the office wagekek existence.

Attached: 1537763232732.jpg (650x486, 64K)

> 40 hours + overtime
> $1000 a week
> great idea

Attached: ehhh.jpg (919x1222, 215K)

Hey man, don't knock it. Still better than office wagin, at least he makes something of value from a chunk of metal.

At 33 I would probably learn a trade, it seems to be the best option for someone who needs to get back into the workforce and have decent income quickly.

I work that much and make about 700$ a month.

Third world country here, I seriously cant even fathom making as much money as you guys that live in developed countries.

Damn bro that sucks. I take home $3,000 every two weeks and that's kind of shit where I live.

But living costs and expenses balance this out, meaning I probably living at the same level of consumption as you do.

If you don't enjoy sitting quietly in an office and communicating with people who are sitting beside you by sending cat emojis in an app, then i'd steer clear. its possible to find better people, but the sitting... and staring... and typing.... is... a ... killer...

>But living costs and expenses balance this out, meaning I probably living at the same level of consumption as you do.

Doubt it, I make just about enough money to be broke.

thats 4k a month. Which is better then 2k a month

what do? where?

do you still get to take clients out, get em drunk, and make sales or is that era over and done with?

im a 31 yo neet. And need a trade.I was looking at my local tech school but they have stupid shit on there. Any ideas?

no shit. you think life's over because youre 33 years old? what the fuck kind of horseshit question is this. unless youre ready to enter through the golden gates themselves its never too late to do anything you faggot. just do it.

what are my options is what im asking? too many directions from here. don't know what to do.

Just start a business bro.

become a labourer and they will pay for trainining
become a deckhand, or a bridge watchkeeper,

Become a nurse

I got out of restaurant work. Basically tripled my income. Id call it a net improvement

Unironically YOLO, do and be whatever/whoever you want. Money/woman/family/children/friends/travel/deadendjob/etc. Go out and look for opportunity, thinking about what to do for the next 10 years will get you nothing. You need some soul searching, set up some goals, what this goals are may not be what they are in 10 years but you can adjust later. Set some goals, work towards them as hard as you can, fuck the rest.

Sounds like he already tried that with music. Bad advice.

Coding where you use "logical reasoning" only really happens anymore in startups where you'll have no job security and trash-tier benefits. Coding jobs at large companies where you can expect to get good benefits usually boil down to copying and pasting existing shit into a framework that the company hacked together, there will be very few times where you'll actually use proper logic.

I don't know about webdev because I specifically avoided going into that field, but I've heard that it's full of Tumblrinas, so there's that.

The bigger issue will be finding a job. All companies have by now figured out how to abuse the H-1B system, so for your job where you're just copying and pasting shit you'll have to compete with overseas hires who can do the same thing for cheaper because it's so easy and requires no critical thinking. Most places will not hire you unless you're book-smart. Forget actually learning to code, you're gonna have to follow the Indian school of thought and *memorize* how to code so that you can answer all the definition-based questions at your interviews because knowing how to answer googlable questions on the spot is worth more than solving coding problems somehow nowadays. This will probably work out for you guys since you're lawyers and used to memorizing things, but a lot of people that learned coding as a hobby are struggling right now because no one is looking for people who can code anymore since frameworks have already done the job for most companies. I went on Jow Forums the other day and there was a job thread that read like a doomer thread.

same. 31 year old with law degree and masters. Law is shit, full of boring sociopaths that will take any opportunity to stab you in the back to climb the ladder.

I miss playing in the school playground, simple things in life. I wish i was back in the 15th century, living and hunting with red indians. Smoking pot.

Fuck this world.

this
Tumblrinas everywhere, handle the design and user interface, do approx ~18 minutes of work per 8 hour day

This was me working as a mech.engineer. Quit that shit and neve looked back. Now I'm a full time digital asset investor/trader/researcher.

Sounds like a comfy job

Dude I live in Los Angeles making medical devices, I make $600 a week.. I would literally kill people for $1000 a week

>full time digital asset investor/trader/researcher
you mean a Jow Forums NEET?

>. I went on Jow Forums the other day and there was a job thread that read like a doomer thread.
Dont take that place seriously, its full of uni aspies with no internships or workplace experience sperging out during interviews and wondering why theyre unemployed after college

>me finally passing CFA Lvl 2

Bad advice? He was doing music, he did it for probably 10 years, and didn't die and is still alive right now. Trying to please normalfags by being a good goy, or focusing in dumb shit that you can buy doesn't matter. Having money is good but if your mind isn't in the right place, money is irrelevant. I agree that money is a good thing and you should work for it. But I also believe you should hit rock bottom to humble you as a person and focus on what's important and develop the right working mindset

I wound up addicted to heroin and had to move across the country. serious.

Stop making shitty decisions then, if you didn't learn from it, no one else can help you

I agree that's shitty but jobs that pay that much are rare for a lot of people.

i'm 42 and starting euro med school later this year - 6 years until i become a junior doctor. i'm in a worse position than you, and i'm still mad enough to risk it.

I dream about living in old times every day. This synthetic world we’ve created for ourselves truly is a dystopia

How did you waste your life in music? I'm 29 and been working in finance and IT for the past 8 years and full of regret. All I want to do is start a band and start playing open mics.

Attached: 1522386865869.jpg (550x366, 60K)

Ten years ago, I retrained as a nurse when I was 40. Best career move ever. As long as you are still able to work, you can retrain as anything.

look the thing is once you learned a new job in x years you will just notice that the job will be either gone to automation or will be sooner or later. we live in a time shortly before the singularity (will happen in the next 20 years) after that the world as we know it today will be gone. and so will be 99.9% of all jobs (and no it wont create "new jobs")

all anyone can do right now imo is to scale down spending as much as possible, start earning passive income, and wait. in 50 years no human being will have a "job" anymore. and this will be a bummer for murrifats because they define there self worth trough monetary value and all the nice stuff one owns. you dont own the stuff tho the stuff owns you spent time on developing your mental ability not on the accumulation of wealth

Attached: 1546102241309.jpg (409x409, 48K)

and one more thing if you are not happy with your current live situation I promise you it has nothing to do with your job. you can change your job a thousand times and will not find happiness that way. happiness is found inside yourself. money "can help" you find it but is neither a requirement nor a guarantee.

>All I want to do is start a band and start playing open mics.

That's a pretty obtainable goal my dude. I was doing that in high school.

strong bluepill right there
if a singularity happens, then wealth will be redefined just as much as employment
therefore you should worry about scaling UP your spending until it meets what you make, perhaps even get in debt for the sake of living experiences and staying healthy

>if the singularity happens
kek
you do you fren. i already earn enough passive income right now to live a comfy life for as along as i wish. and it is only increasing that is what you do once you know how to handle money. I bet you go wage

How many years of school? What kind of nursing?

Is coding really a meme?

I'm a finance major and I'm constantly depressed. I hate my major so much. I can't see myself doing this shit. I've been in and out of school for about 6 years now and nowhere near being done. I thought about just dropping out and learning how to do web dev. I hope this works out for me. I've switched majors like 3 times already. The only job I've had is as a waiter. I don't want to work as a waiter anymore, so I really hope this shit works out for me.

Attached: 1420505588697.png (315x476, 195K)

Coding wouldnt be anymore interesting unless you really enjoy it. Webdev is filled with pajeets as well.

I want to do a business degree cuz id love to manage CS pajeets rather than be one.

webdev is pretty terrible. you spend most of your time screwing around with needlessly complicated frameworks, writing in terrible languages like Javascript, and fiddling with HTML bullshit. Most of it is copy-paste work. Very little logic involved, in fact I'd hardly call it programming at all unless you're writing back-end code.

No kids or wife to bring home the bacon for? Have your health? The world is your oyster. Go back at any age and do what makes sense. It’s better than being a chicken shit, trading time for money doing things you hate.

Godspeed Boomer.

We're gonna make it.

high level math is what you're looking for fren, anything else is mainly plug and chug

alternatively follow the /sci's puremath+cs meme

Tradie here. I'm unlicensed and uninsured. Not even sure what you mean by bonding but it sounds pretty gay.

Yes, tell me what to do. NEET in norway. No fancy schmancy trade schools here i think. Unless there is.

What kind of stuff did you play user? Did you write your own songs too

Once (or if) you get a family - wife, kids. You will no longer have the option to go down in pay to pursuit another career, you will be trapped in your current occupation for the rest of your life.

The Life expectancy for a 33 yo in a western country is +80. Treatment options and medicin in general, means you will spend the 90% of these remaining years healthy, furthermore the government is constantly moving up retirement age.. what you are looking forward to, is 40 more years on the job market.

When you are working with something you find interesting, your job doesn't feel as much of a job, you don't hate mondays to the same extend as you would do if you have a job you "hate".
Your interest also have a positive affect on your career and you productivity. You have an easier time learning new things - if you like it and are motivated about it. you'll have an easier time going the "extra mile" and getting into a more well-paid position.

In short, don't listen to the boomers, you need to find a job where you have some passion for it, that catch your attention and continuously motivate you.

I'm a 30 yo boilermaker/welder and back is fucked. Any advice on upskilling. I can't exactly start a business the gear and space required is expensive af.

Get competive grandpa, look at jobs in demand and work for them, I doubt your age matters much if you have the skills. Basically whatever people would do to differentiate themselves besides saying "I have a degree and I work, hire me" you present that to an employer

>Godspeed Boomer.
cheers kid!

Attached: 610jFzu6z8L._UX250_.jpg (250x354, 13K)

What do you do user?

you can live to 400 years old if you drink distilled water and only eat vegetarian.

Woah dude how did that happen?

programming sucks guys, don't do it. i'm stuck doing it and don't know how to get out. i feel like half of my life isn't my own.

I wanted to make the switch from marketing copy writing to coding but I ended up failing at that and using the front end skills to get a job as an accessibility specialist so now I have a job advising on meeting WCAG 2.0 guidelines working entirely remotely for a company. It's a growing field that doesn't require nearly the amount of work actually learning to code does.

Loving the positivity in this thread. We're all gonna make it.

Attached: 1547135259956.png (680x661, 245K)

Some people are willing to waste 5 years waiting for a bullrun that might never happen. In 5 years you'll learn a new skill and make shit load of money.
5 years go fast think about it.

do you? it's pretty easy to do that. its a hobby thought, and it's not fulfilling.
its a meme bro. you can learn it in under 6 months if you pick the right languages. without a degree in comp science, your best bet is to do Wordpress
best advice
I was thinking about doing this. change my mind
Age matters a lot for entry level gigs. So if you're changing careers and over 30, there's a huge barrier to entry.
All the musicians I admired did smack. My band wasn't going very far, so I thought, am I doing everything I could to get this career going?! that and my dad was a psycho.

Honestly I do get a lot of satisfaction solving actual tangible problems at work and seeing them get realized but a grindstone is a grindstone and engineers can get kicked around a lot. You've gotta have an autistic streak and I mean that in the best way possible, like an unironic "oh boy I've been auditing this data manually for three weeks I can't wait to stay late and query it!" kind of way. If you aren't genuinely infatuated with patterns and numbers you burn out quick, and that's a lot of the normie engineers.

For

Thanks for the pep talk kid.
Do it. Its good money. Just take care of your body user. No job is worth your health.

Do those as a weekend warrior.

Come out to West Texas/New Mexico and work on oil rigs. If you get a mudlogging job you can make $200 a day starting and still shitpost half the day, no living expenses because living in a trailor. It is great. Righands get better pay and get to go home every two weeks. Everyone is hiring out here and this shit will fix your circulation problems

u kinda fuarked up already, use that money u was gonna go to school with and go all in on crypto. I wont tell u which one but u can probably guess(not link). Moon szn is approaching

I'm 31 I make pizzas for minimum wage and I want so fucking badly to switch careers

i have engineering and law. i hate working for anyone so i cant hold a job. all i want to do is print money and fuck hot women all day long. thats it.

What skills do I need for this?

How do you break into that field. Everyone wants 1 yr 3xperience

I am 29 studying for my builders qualification. I first started working 3 years ago and about one year in, i started working with a guy we will call mike. Mike spent 10 years messing with music and was working dead end retail jobs but he wasnt really the type to care about money nevertheless. I was a bit more experienced than him, and would generally show him how to use power tools and whatnot, it was difficult at first for him, he suffered to a certain degree but not without purpose in the end. After working for 1.5 years he became highly proficient in carpentry and general building work, he said he enjoyed carpentry the most and would watch videos in his spare time and tell me about the things and tricks he learned from videos. Later on, he enrolled in a trade school and started working with a team of carpenters.

Point of this story is user, that my friend was 35 years old when we started together, and he would have never had thought he would have become a carpenter. But just because he was living next to the jobsite we were working on, had a good attitude and was willing to do labor work, led him to a career path to which he had no natural ability or proclivity towards.

Although he was somewhat nihlistic at the beginning he later developed a passion for carpentry and his outlook changed. Its never too late user. You must be prepared to suffer however, it wont be for long, and it will be worth it for whatever trade you decide on.

this, but i dont hate mondays but the commute to work and waking up

I'm thinking I can always put a bullet into my head if all else fails.

Are you me? Also 31 and making pizzas, albeit for slightly above minimum wage.

I'm pretty sure the job jacked up my knees and back more than they were before working in pizza for 5+ years.

Bond with my dick fag

where do you live?

>36 y/o based boomer. He was like a chad grandpa

you better be a bait, fag
