Staying relevant in the comedy scene and maintain connections. He and that show always had a somewhat cult following, and him being a pothead gave his podcast a good headstart.

It's a mystery to me as well. Based on his grammar and vocabulary he has a genuinely low IQ, and he's one of the least funny comedians I've ever heard. The only other person I can think of who has achieved his level of success with so little brain power is Howard Stern, who interestingly was basically the Joe Rogan of that era (FM radio vs. podcasting).

He was one of the literal first people doing podcasts and now podcasts make more money than golden era youtube. People like watching his interviews because the guest is in the driver seat and he only hops in with questions that a lot of people are currently asking about the subject, or if he feels like it needs to be broken down into 3rd grade comprehension (assuming if he doesn't understand it, his viewers won't either).
Others are following in his style of interviewing, but he blew up when people got sick of the "old" style of interviewing trying to cater to a perceived audience or put their narrative on the subject.
