Depends. I had the luxury of attending a uni where startups and research were abundant so I could learn coding from great mentors.
My degree was in math and I learned coding from startup experience and time in a computational biology lab. Best of both worlds. If you aren't in a position to find coding experience like that, put yourself in a position to. It's invaluable and probably extremely difficult to learn on your own I think.

Yep. My commitment is one weekend a month and two weeks of active duty training over summer for eight years as an officer. Pay starts at about 500/month and ends at like 1000/month plus basically free health insurance. That is of course with possibility of deployments, but those sound like a good experience to me.
