From what I've gathered most people trap themselves in that situation by making big decisions way too early in life. On the other hand though there are a fair amount of people who grew up poor and have to do that sort of thing just to put food on the table.

The definition of work in America is pretty loose however. Many have side gigs that they go to less than 8 hours a week and consider that a whole new job. They aren't wrong but it's not a full-time thing. At one point I had 3 jobs, but one was a side thing I did on the weekends for a few hours and the other two were for the same company and building, but in a different branch and with a different role. I would work a standard 6-2 in the first role M-F, and then go directly to working in the second role a few days of the week for a shift. It definitely wasn't comparable to working 2 full time jobs for separate companies.

it's hard to measure in cash, especially if you have a family
a lot of people are happier making 45k if they get benefits like health insurance than if they make 60k without it and have to pay out of pocket

I live in europe, salaries are more average than yours, maybe because of fixed taxes (you can't choose to have insurance for example)

It depends on where you live. In rural areas, working class people who make 20k can have a "decent" standard of living assuming they budget. In the same area, people who make 50-60k can be considered the "core" middle class for the area, while a doctor making over 100k will live rather lavishly with a large home and a large property. The average earner, especially on the younger end, makes somewhere around 30k however, even with a college education or a trade certification.

This all goes out the window when people move into big cities. People will make more money generally, but all of that will get eaten up by Cost of living expenses like rent and groceries. Unskilled jobs will still only pay around 20k/year in cities, and that's where the lot of the people who have to work 2-3 jobs to pay bills live. I remember watching a documentary a few years back where a group of young adults from places like California and New York moved into surplus temporary housing trailers in rural North Dakota to take advantage of their unusually high wages and low cost of living to get out of the trap.
