I have narcolepsy and know a ton about this drug. Modafinil has two distinct effects:
1) Stimulant-like focus which disappears if you take it more than 2-3 days weekly due to tolerance. Tolerance is hard to avoid due to the super long half-life. I take it 4-5 days weekly and I haven't gotten this effect in a long time.
2) Wakefulness-promoting properties (IE what it's meant for) which there does not seem to be subject to tolerance. This is is why every study on modafinil says there is no tolerance because they're using it to treat narcolepsy. This effect has not gone away or gotten weaker despite taking it for several years.

Also I've never experienced withdrawal even when stopping cold turkey after taking it for months. Doesn't seem to be addictive. Coffee is harder to give up for me.
